Sawing wood is a task that faces many people: from professional lumberjacks to summer residents and even residents of city apartments who regularly go out for barbecues. At the same time, the hand saw has almost completely become obsolete: professionals have no time, they need productivity, but ordinary people rightly believe that an automated tool will allow them not to expend extra effort. Today, there are gasoline and electric chainsaws on the market that make working with wood easier. Separately, there are tools powered by batteries.
Features of using cordless chain saws
Saws powered by an autonomous current source are less widespread than classic network saws or those powered by fuel combustion. However, it was on their example that an attempt was made to take its advantages from each type of propulsion.
From its corded counterpart, the cordless saw took all the advantages of a device with an electric motor, and from its gasoline counterpart, mobility, which has always been the key advantage of ICE-powered saws. Unfortunately, there are also some characteristic disadvantages that the use of batteries brings: short operating time from one battery and the need for long recharging.
Because of this factor, saws with replaceable batteries are closed off to logging sites and other areas where a lot of work needs to be done and there is no outlet nearby. But it found its audience in work on the site: among builders and installers of wooden structures, as well as in the everyday life of ordinary summer residents, who do not need to regularly cut down trees.
This was facilitated by the advantages of a portable electric tool:
- Mobility.
- Possibility of working in confined spaces due to the lack of exhaust, where chainsaws are not allowed.
- Much less noise and vibration during operation.
- No gasoline smell, fire safety.
Mensela CS-L1 Compact Cordless Chainsaw with 4" Blade
After reading reviews from other authors, I decided to order a small chain saw for myself. I have a lot of dead wood in my garden - it’s more convenient to cut it thinner with just such a saw, and you can also quickly cut branches for the grill :) In the end, the saw left mixed impressions. More details - under the cut. The box was quite damaged on the road, but was able to retain its contents. Inside, everything is simply piled up, without a hint of compaction. Contents: saw body, bar, chain, two batteries, charger, key, screwdriver, seals and sleeves (!). The saw comes with a spring-loaded top sawdust guard, but I immediately rolled it up and put it in the same drawer with the gloves and sleeves.
The saw has a lock against accidental activation and some kind of finger protection.
Another feature is the presence of backlighting. This is probably good, but when I try to imagine who could use this saw in the dark, all sorts of bad associations arise.
Inside, everything is quite normal for such devices. Commutator motor, gearbox, power button. On the other side there is a drive gear and a chain tension adjustment screw.
I disassembled the gearbox after the tests, as you can see, sawdust got inside. Well, the grease had dried out a little, so I added it during assembly.Close-up of the chain.
The tire is without a gear at the end.
We put the chain on the bar, put the bar in the groove and make sure that the tensioner pin fits.
The correct position of the chain teeth is indicated on the housing near the drive gear and on the chain guard.
Next, we install the casing and tighten the adjustment screw so that the chain does not dangle, but it can be turned by hand.
The length of the canvas available for work is slightly less than 10 cm.
Let's take another look at the battery. Weighs 273 grams. The declared capacity is 2000 mAh, but inside there are 1300 mAh cans, which is a little sad. In general, it was the battery that turned out to be the most controversial part of the kit, but more on that later.
The charger is quite standard - 21V, 0.8A.
It's time to move on to practice. The saw lies comfortably in the hand. Weighs approximately 1.5 kg (I forgot to weigh it at home, and there were no scales at the dacha, so I indicate the weight “by eye”).
This is obvious, but let me remind you that during use the chain must be lubricated from time to time. The first test was a cherry branch with a diameter of 3 cm. The saw defeated it in 3.5 seconds.
Pear, 3.5 cm – 5.8 sec.
Elderberry, 5.1 cm – 8 sec.
But the saw can no longer overcome the same elderberry with a diameter of 8 cm - the battery goes into protection. Unfortunately, the manufacturer was greedy on higher-current banks. The limit for sawing a fresh branch in one go with a complete battery is 6 cm. With dry branches it is even more difficult - the saw can no longer handle a 4-cm branch in one go. Despite the fact that the saw itself has much greater potential. I put a battery on it from a recently reviewed trimmer
, and she got a “second wind” - she saws dry branches with a diameter of up to 8 cm. (The video included samples with 7 and 8 cm branches from slightly rotten cherry plum, so the saw takes it in 10 seconds, which is slightly indicative. I sawed normal dry branches with a diameter of 7-8 cm while sitting on an apple tree 4 meters from the ground, so filming this process on video was problematic - the saw took them in 20-25 seconds.)
The original battery was enough for such a pile - 32 saws with a diameter of 4 to 6 cm.
At the same time, it was not yet completely discharged, but it could not provide comfortable work either - it was possible to cut a 5-centimeter branch in 3 approaches. After that it charged for 2 hours. The saw left behind conflicting impressions. On the one hand, the included battery clearly does not take away the full potential of the tool. On the other hand, as far as I understand, such small saws are simply not intended for regular sawing of thick branches - their destiny is 5-7-centimeter fresh branches, which the subject can cope with quite well. In general, this time I won’t risk giving any recommendations regarding the purchase.

Differences from a chainsaw
The principle of operation of battery-powered saws and gasoline-powered units is similar: sawing is carried out by a chain that engages with the drive sprocket and moves along the groove of a special guide bar. Therefore, the saw unit is almost identical. Cordless saws also have an oil reservoir and plunger pump to lubricate the chain cooling during operation.
The absence of a gasoline engine made it possible to get rid of the gas tank and bulky crankcase. Most saws don't have a clutch either. The electric motor can be located across or along the saw, the chain drive is direct or bevel gear. Only a very few models of powerful professional electric saws have a centrifugal clutch. The heaviest element of such a saw after the engine is the battery; they try to place it closer to the operator to improve weight distribution.
Types of chain saws
A portable tool equipped with a chain saw is indispensable for sawing firewood and lumber, pruning fruit trees and cutting down forests. Its working part is a chain closed in a ring, moving along a guide bar. Depending on the situation and type of work, several types of chain saws can be used.
Electrical (network)
The power tool operates from the mains, which immediately affects the possibilities of its use. It can only be used in areas where there is access to an outlet. The coverage area is limited by the length of the extension cord. But they are quite suitable for dismantling wooden buildings and cutting down apple trees.
Electric chain saw
The engine is connected to the sawing machine using a transmission system. To operate the motor, the cable is connected to the mains.
Sawing wood with a corded power tool
The power of the saw is less compared to its gasoline counterpart. But there are also advantages: when using an electric tool, much less noise is produced, and the absence of exhaust allows it to be used in enclosed spaces. Servicing electric devices is much easier and cheaper than gasoline ones.
Gasoline
The saws are equipped with an internal combustion engine. They are less environmentally friendly, but more powerful. However, the mobility of the tool makes it possible to use a chainsaw everywhere: in the country and in the forest, on construction sites and on hikes.
Gasoline chain saw
Rechargeable
For short-term use, a cordless chain saw is very effective. They combine the mobility of gas-powered tools and the environmental friendliness, simplicity and convenience of networked models. The power of the devices is not too large, but sufficient to carry out work on personal plots.
Cordless chain saw Greenworks
Separately, we can also mention hand saws, which are easy to use, but not very functional. To cut a tree, you need to wrap a chain around it on both sides, and then cut it alone or with a partner.
Pocket Hiking Chainsaw
Criteria for choosing a cordless chainsaw
In order to decide on a tool model, you need to familiarize yourself with the characteristics, the combination of which is most suitable for performing current tasks. Therefore, the saw of a professional builder will be different from the device of a summer resident who occasionally takes care of the garden, but does not want to deal with either long wires or the hassle that a gasoline internal combustion engine can create.
Power
A decisive parameter that affects operating time, productivity and weight. Battery saws are available with motors from 1 to 4 kW. If all that is required from the unit is a cross cut of boards and beams of 2 - 4 cm, then one and a half kW will be enough with a margin. For harvesting firewood and felling small trees, as well as maintaining a large old garden, you need to choose models with maximum power. Do not forget about the downside: the more powerful the device, the heavier it is, and the battery must be very capacious.
Engine location
The design of a chain saw with a removable battery can have two layouts:
- The transverse arrangement of the electric motor makes the saw shorter. The center of gravity is closer to the user, so the arms and back get less tired when working. The drive sprocket is driven directly from the engine shaft. The downside is the large width and inconvenience when the tire is in a horizontal position.
- With a longitudinal arrangement , the device will be “thin”, but longer, since the shaft is located along the tire. The drive is through a bevel helical gear, which slightly reduces efficiency and gets hot during prolonged operation. But the saw turns out to be narrow, it is convenient for it to operate in any position.
At the same time, the location does not provide decisive advantages in speed and quality of cutting - here you need to focus on the habits of the user himself and the nature of the work performed.
Tire length
Most models are available with tires ranging from 20 to 40 cm in length. The tires have the same mounting as chainsaws, so the units are interchangeable. For country work - cutting branches, sawing boards - a length of 25 cm will be enough. But if the task is to saw firewood or dismantle thick timber, then it is better to take a tire of maximum length, equipped with a powerful engine.
Battery parameters
What battery is installed on your saw?
LithiumNickel
The more powerful the battery, the longer the tool will work. But to charge it, you will need a special device that produces a powerful charging current, otherwise restoring capacity may take half a day. The weight of the replaceable module also increases. When viewing models, pay attention to two parameters: supply voltage and capacity. The first is measured in volts, the second in ampere-hours. The voltage can be from 18 V for low-power models with a short bar - loppers - to 82 V for powerful tools that are not inferior in performance to the best chainsaw equipment. It is better to take a higher capacity - this way the saw will work longer on one charge.
There are two battery manufacturing technologies:
- Lithium (lithium-ion, lithium-polymer). As the capacitance decreases, the voltage does not drop. Holds a charge for a long time and stably, has no memory effect.
- Nickel (nickel-cadmium, nickel-metal hydride). It has a memory effect, but is cheaper and can produce more current under short-term but heavy loads.
Some manufacturers provide two batteries in the kit. Having used up the charge in one, the user changes it and puts the empty one on charge. Other saws, on the contrary, do not contain anything in the box except the housing itself with the motor.
Criterias of choice
If you want to purchase a durable and high-quality saw with a battery, you should pay attention to the advice and recommendations of experts so as not to make mistakes when choosing:
- Battery type – preference should be given to models with lithium-ion batteries. They have a long service life and are considered more efficient, capable of functioning in the most unfavorable conditions, incl. at low temperatures.
- Operating mode - when purchased for irregular use, self-discharge cannot be avoided - for nickel batteries it can be up to 20% every month. In this case, we must not forget about the “memory effect” and charge only after complete discharge.
- Power - affects the degree of performance, and the values are usually in the range of 18 - 36 W. For serious projects, more powerful equipment is needed.
- Ergonomics - it is better to purchase models with light weight that are comfortable to hold in your hands.
- Build quality - fastenings of all parts must be reliable and durable, without play or damage.
- Availability of useful options - it is better to choose models with additional functionality: start blocking, inertia brake, lubrication of cutting elements, engine overload protection, convenient chain tensioner, etc. Such features indicate the wear resistance and durability of the model.
- Manufacturer – there is a large selection of high-quality branded models. Their cost is higher than Chinese counterfeits, especially if they have useful options. However, they will not create any problems and will cope with all tasks over a long service life. An additional advantage is the presence of a warranty from the manufacturers of branded goods.
The best compact cordless saws
Not everyone needs a long tire. If you need a saw to trim branches, then there is no need for a heavy tool at all. In addition, compact cordless saws allow women to comfortably work and care for the garden, who benefit from their light weight and size.

What to look for when choosing a model
When thinking about purchasing a battery model, you should pay attention to the following aspects:
- Tool manufacturer. Battery chainsaws are manufactured by Husqvarna, KARCHER, Stihl, Bosch, WORX, Makita, Gardena, Ryobi, Greenworks, Black & Decker and some other companies.
Ryobi Cordless Chainsaw
Cordless disc unit with saw length 40 cm
- Supply voltage and battery capacity. There is no power indicator as such in the characteristics of cordless saws. Instead, battery voltage and capacity should be used to determine performance.
The higher the voltage, the more powerful the equipment. The capacity indicator indicates how long the saw can operate without recharging. Depending on the battery, the unit can operate on a single charge from 15 minutes to an hour.
- Saw bar length . This parameter determines the diameter of the log that the saw can cut. As a rule, cordless chain saws are equipped with tires 20…40 cm long.
Household unit with a small saw bar
- Motor location. When the engine is placed transversely, it becomes possible to work more efficiently in the vertical plane. But in confined spaces, such fixation of the power unit may be inconvenient. The longitudinal position promotes better balancing, which ensures flawless sawing at any angle.
- Engine's type. Brushless models not only have high reliability, but also save battery power.
Brushless motor
- Unit weight , which can be important when sawing wood over a long period of time.
- The presence of a relay that protects the motor from overheating when the temperature rises unacceptable.
- Device for adjusting tension and removing the chain. As a rule, this does not require additional tools. Adjustment is easy to do with your own hands.
- Manufacturer of tires and chains. The products of Shtil, Husqvarna and Makita companies are in greatest demand. Oregon tires also perform well. They are equipped with tools of medium and high price categories.
- Equipped with a brake mechanism that ensures safe operation and protects against reverse impact.
- The presence of a power lock , which protects the tool from accidental starts.
- Possibility of automatic lubrication of the saw bar.
Important! Insufficient lubrication can result in injury due to chain breakage.
- Ergonomics of the chain device . The saw should be easy to use.
- The price of the unit , which is determined by performance, reliability and the presence of a battery and charger in the package.
Electric chain saw safety
A chain saw is a dangerous tool. Careless handling can result in serious injury or even death. Therefore, it is extremely important that the saw has all the options to ensure operator safety while working.
All electric saws are equipped with a chain brake lever that stops the chain when it hits your hand. But the manufacturing quality of this element may differ from one manufacturer to another. Before purchasing, you should check the operation of the chain brake - the lever should snap off with a slight force on it.
Accidental activation lock allows you to block the power button and ensures that the tool will not turn on if the button is accidentally pressed.
The inertia brake stops the chain when the tool is turned off. If the saw does not have this option, after turning off the tool, the chain continues to move by inertia for some time - this may be enough to cause injury.
Anti-vibration allows you to reduce the vibration load on your hands and increase the safety of the tool
Don't skimp on chain saw safety. If you buy a cheap screwdriver of dubious quality, in the worst case you will lose the money you paid for it. And in the case of a chain saw, excessive savings can lead to loss of health or life.
