Advantages and disadvantages of electric toothbrushes
Any technique is imperfect, and has not only positive sides, but also negative ones. To cast aside all doubts about the advisability of buying an electric toothbrush, you need to familiarize yourself with its main advantages and disadvantages.
The main advantages of using electric toothbrushes:
- A large range of hygiene products with various built-in functions, design, power and pricing policy. Everyone will be able to choose the most preferable option for themselves, taking into account the individual characteristics of the body and financial capabilities.
- Save time. Teeth brushing time is reduced to 2 minutes without loss of quality. Some models are equipped with a timer that tracks the time of the hygiene procedure.
- A large selection of attachments of different shapes and with varying degrees of bristle stiffness.
- You can buy one electric toothbrush for the whole family, but use individual brush heads. This will allow you to significantly save money and at the same time efficiently clean the oral cavity of all household members without exception.
- Gum massage. The toothbrush is equipped with rotating bristles that do not injure, but gently massage. This stimulates blood circulation and accelerates regenerative processes.
- Reduced toothpaste consumption.
- Most heads for electric toothbrushes are equipped with wear indicators (it is recommended to change them at least once every 3 months).
- Highly effective plaque removal. The bristles not only rotate, but also vibrate during operation. Oscillatory waves contribute to the destruction and removal of plaque in areas where it is simply impossible to mechanically influence dirt.
- Equipped with a time sensor.
- Better care for orthodontic structures such as implants, crowns, braces.
Disadvantages include:
- High cost when compared to regular toothbrushes.
- The device can run out of charge at the most inopportune moment.
- There are no absolute contraindications to the use of an electric toothbrush, but it is not recommended to use it for stomatitis, acute gingivitis, high sensitivity of teeth, fluorosis, increased mobility of teeth, as well as after surgical interventions on the oral cavity.
Note ! When choosing an electric toothbrush, it is recommended to rely on the recommendations of your dentist.
Types of electric brushes, pros and cons of the device
Today, leading manufacturers of equipment and electronics have developed a large number of types of electric brushes for adults, each of which has its own advantages and disadvantages. An electric brush will help remove plaque and protect teeth from caries and other dental problems.
Devices can be powered by mains power, AA batteries or rechargeable batteries, and have different designs and even designs. Price is an equally important indicator when choosing. Operational efficiency does not depend on the price category. Typically, you get additional features for a higher price. Inexpensive models are just as effective, but have little functionality.
According to the method of cleaning teeth, electric toothbrushes are divided into types:
Classic - equipped with a rotating head that performs pulsed rotations. The device may have several attachments - for cleaning the tongue, gum massage, etc.;
Sound - has a generator in its design that processes the electrical flow into a sound wave. Such a device makes at least 18 thousand rotations per minute;
Ultrasonic - works from a generator, however, unlike the sound model, it converts electricity into ultrasonic waves that affect the enamel and destroy tartar. The device makes more than 100 thousand revolutions in 1 minute.
Reviews from dentists indicate that the classic and sonic options are suitable for daily cleaning, but the ultrasonic electric brush is used intermittently.
Before choosing a high-quality electric toothbrush, take a look at the table comparing the advantages and disadvantages of the hygiene device:
Advantages of an electric brush | Disadvantages of an electric brush |
Thorough cleaning of teeth and oral cavity, including inaccessible places; | Damage to enamel and gums due to improper use |
Uniform cleaning of areas; | Batteries need to be recharged or replaced regularly; |
Less time spent on the procedure (2 minutes); | Contraindications for people with dental defects, inflammatory processes in the mouth and other pathologies |
Process control thanks to a timer. |
Which electric toothbrush is better to choose?
The question of choosing an electric toothbrush is open to many, because the effectiveness of the device has been proven many times and the prices are quite reasonable. On the household appliances market you can find a large assortment of brushes from different manufacturers with different configurations, ergonomics and pricing policies. This causes some difficulties.
What criteria are recommended to pay attention to when choosing an electric toothbrush?
- Manufacturer . When choosing an electric toothbrush, it is better to choose models from proven and well-established manufacturers. This is a guarantee of high quality assembly and materials used in production. Also, when choosing, you should take into account the recommendations of your dentist and user reviews.
- Type of electric toothbrush . Electric toothbrushes are divided into rotary and vibrating.
- Manufacturing materials . The cleaning surface is made from artificial materials, since pathogenic organisms accumulate and multiply on natural fibers. The body is rubberized. This reduces the chance of current flowing into the handle during use.
- Available functionality . Most modern models are equipped with a pressure control function, a timer, the ability to synchronize with a smartphone, and an indicator of the condition of the bristles at the nozzle. Perhaps the most useful option is a pressure sensor, which allows you to carefully care for the enamel without damaging its surface.
- Equipment . Some models of electric toothbrushes come with a large number of additional attachments. Such models are usually more expensive. However, if you buy attachments separately, the brush will be more expensive.
- Available operating modes . It is better to give preference to models with several speed modes - delicate and intensive cleaning. Thanks to this feature of work, the oral cavity adapts to the electrical device. Models with different operating modes are suitable for all family members without exception.
- Nutrition . The more autonomous the device, the better. The best option is if the toothbrush is equipped with a rechargeable battery, the charge of which lasts for 1-2 weeks. You can safely take such models with you on trips, business trips, etc. It’s even better if the device is equipped with a charge indicator that displays the battery status.
These are the main parameters that it is recommended to pay attention to when choosing an electric toothbrush for yourself and your entire family. To protect yourself from buying a counterfeit or device of dubious quality, it is better to buy them in large or chain stores of household appliances, pharmacies. To make your search easier, let's look at the list of the best electric toothbrushes in 2021.

What is a sonic electric brush
A sonic electric toothbrush is a device with a built-in high-frequency generator that creates sound waves. They cause the bristles to vibrate - from 28 to 30 thousand per minute, depending on the specific model. This frequency of movements of the villi forms a flow with paste, saliva and water that washes away food debris from the teeth. Modes
The toothbrushes we tested give a good idea of the variety of brushing modes available. Along with everyday cleaning, there is a mode for sensitive teeth with reduced performance of the gadget, and an even more gentle cleaning mode for gums to take care of inflamed areas. Both Braun and Philips offer polishing, whitening, and tongue cleaning programs. At the same time, cheaper models also offer a mode for sensitive teeth, but for whitening, tongue cleaning or turbo mode you will need to pay extra, although all this would require only minimal changes when programming the brushes. In our opinion, the most popular thing would be to have a program for cleaning gums. The tongue can also be cleaned manually.
Philips FlexCare stood out somewhat originally during our testing: in addition to three main cleaning modes, this model offers low, medium and high intensity levels for each of them. This way all nine modes are obtained. Second place goes to the Braun Oral-B Genius 9000 with six (real) modes. However, few of the brushes sold in stores, including branded ones, lag far behind in this parameter.
We determine the duration of battery life by operating the brush with a resistance of 150 g (red cylinder) at two-minute intervals with pauses
