Almost every one of us has dropped a smartphone; some were not lucky enough to even bathe the gadget in water. The consequences of such accidental falls are unpleasant: at best - expensive repairs, at worst - buying a new smartphone. Even special covers and glass do not always save. If you want to keep your smartphone safe and sound, then it’s better to pay attention to protected models. They will be especially useful for people who travel a lot and go on hikes, love extreme sports, or work in dusty and dirty places. Protected smartphones are not afraid of dust and falls, can withstand immersion under water, and this will not in any way affect their integrity and performance. The market is saturated with similar devices, but we have selected for you the best powerful rugged smartphones of 2021. Our rating included new and proven models in different price categories.
A shockproof smartphone is easy to recognize by its appearance . Gadgets receive a durable metal or plastic frame and massive rubber pads. Such equipment gives the device immunity to falls and submersion, but affects its size and weight, but here you have to make a choice and decide what is more important, compactness or security. As for the hardware , most models have an average processor, an average amount of memory and the same average cameras (there are exceptions), but this does not prevent them from coping with most of the tasks of the average user. the batteries in secure smartphones are capacious, because it is important for the owner of such a device that the gadget can go without a power outlet for a long time.
The most important parameter when choosing a secure smartphone is the protection class , Ingress Protection Rating. In the marking you will definitely find the letters IP and the two numbers following them: the first indicates the level of protection against dust, dirt and other foreign objects (from 0 to 6), the second is the class of protection against water (from 0 to 8). Information about classes is presented in the table.
It turns out that the best secure smartphone has protection according to the IP 68 . It is better to consider such devices for purchase. As a last resort, a phone with IP67 protection will do.

Caterpillar is a well-known manufacturer of rugged smartphones. It regularly updates its model line and this time decided to please us with a model with a FullHD screen and a capacious battery. The device has a plastic frame with a rubberized coating, the back cover is made of durable rubberized material, the screen is covered with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 , and there are three physical buttons underneath it. The smartphone is protected according to the military standard MIL-STD-810G , which confirms its ability to withstand extreme loads. The manufacturer says that the gadget can lie under water for an hour at a depth of 2 meters.
The processor in the device is not the newest or most powerful, but it is enough for everyday tasks. The amount of RAM is sufficient, the main one can be expanded. The battery is the strong point of the gadget ; in standby mode, the smartphone can last 44 days! Cameras don't catch stars from the sky, but it's a shame to expect something supernatural from a secure smartphone. A minor drawback is also the lack of a fingerprint scanner, but all the disadvantages are compensated by its durability, autonomy and well-thought-out software shell.
As a reminder, the older Cat S 60 has a built-in thermal camera , which turns the device into a thermal imager. In terms of hardware, the gadget is weaker than the S41.
Caterpillar Cat S60
Another smartphone with an unusual solution. A smartphone from 2021, but it still has no analogues. The Cat S60 smartphone was included in the rating of rugged smartphones 2019 because of its main and only feature - a thermal imager.
It costs $580, for this money the manufacturer promises powerful hardware, a compact body and good cameras.
But it also has a lot of disadvantages, such as a small screen resolution, an old format and the absence of familiar elements, such as a fingerprint scanner.
Why do you need a thermal imager? This is a special sensor in the form of a camera that reads the presence of heat in certain areas. By pointing the camera somewhere, a special heat graph will appear on the smartphone screen. The yellower the color on the fragments, the warmer it is in that area. In this way, you can calculate the presence of elevated temperature in photographs. This will be very helpful in searching for living creatures, overvoltages and other unusual situations.
Pros:
- Thermal imager;
- Better performance.
Minuses:
- Very high price;
- Small battery;
- HD display;
- Outdated version of Android;
- The old aspect ratio is 16 by 9.

The smartphone received protection according to the military standard MIL-STD-810G , will withstand falls from a height of 5 m, immersion under water of 2 m, serious temperature changes and even exposure to chemically active substances. This reliability is ensured by the strongest case and protective glass Dragon Glass 5. The smartphone received NFC module and an SOS . The choice of low HD resolution is obviously dictated by the desire to maximize battery life. If you are looking for a rugged smartphone with a powerful battery, then you will definitely like this device with a 6000 mAh battery, an intelligent power management system and a power saving mode. The manufacturer promises up to 1000 hours of standby time.
The previous Conquest S8 model, which is also equipped with a walkie-talkie and a lot of sensors, received 2/16 GB of memory, a 4-core MediaTek 6735 processor, a 5-inch HD screen and a 6000 mAh battery, today you can buy it for $530.
Results
As can be seen from the table, more or less well-known devices have a new standard, MIL-STD-810G, next to the usual IP. This state of affairs can be observed not for the first time: even some non-brutal flagship gadgets have been using a similar abbreviation for a long time. It means that the smartphone has been tested not only for immersion in water, but also for a number of parameters provided for by testing according to the new US military standard. In practice, if the gadget is not used at the bottom of a lake or thrown from a cliff, it will be enough for ordinary users to know that the device does not allow water to pass through. In addition, the main and only strong point that sets the defender apart from the flagship is its massive body, which allows the phone to better survive a fall from a height.
Every gadget in the review has these qualities, but even if you don’t look at the cost, it’s difficult to choose the best one, because each review hero also has unique features like the most capacious battery, walkie-talkie, thermal imager, additional set-top box, etc. Thus, the result is not a TOP, but a review of the best rugged smartphones 2021, offering to choose the most suitable solution in terms of characteristics.

One of the company's new products is the BV 8000 Pro, balanced in all respects. The body is made of metal and thick rubber, available in three colors. Gorilla Glass 3 protection SOS . The kit includes additional protective film, a screwdriver and spare screws. To gain access to SIM cards, you need to unscrew the screws on the case - not very convenient, but reliable. By the way, here you can use two SIM cards and a memory card at once , and this is something that many modern smartphones really lack, which force them to make a choice.
You can praise the device for its excellent screen, good hardware, and good memory. The cameras use sensors from Samsung, the pictures come out acceptable, and if you take into account the price and specifics of the device, the photos can be called very good. The battery, as befits a secure smartphone, is good, it will last for 4 days of average loads. The model can be criticized for the use of not the most modern protective glass; the cameras are also not 100% protected from damage: the gadget survives most falls, but it may not cope with particularly tough ones, resulting in cracks.
Runbo F1 Plus
protection IP 67;- 8-core MediaTek Helio P20 processor, up to 2.4 GHz;
- RAM 6 GB, main memory – 64 GB;
- screen 5.5 inches, 1920*1080;

The gadget received protection from moisture and dust according to IP 67 standard , and has shock protection according to the military standard MIL-810G . The model received a fast charging function, an indicator light, a compass and the ability to expand memory, but did not have a fingerprint scanner. If the weight of the device does not bother you, then you can safely take this device - it will become a faithful assistant in any situation. The model can be purchased at a lower price if you join group purchases or attend a promotion.
The best rugged smartphones of 2021: what is the best way to crack nuts?
After most flagships acquired an IP rating and received protection from dust and moisture, the concept of a protected smartphone became somewhat blurred. At the same time, entire lines of devices appeared, primarily intended for use in industrial and extreme conditions. They are protected much more seriously, enclosed in impact-resistant rubberized cases with metal reinforcement, and have a number of non-standard functions. At the same time, their latest models do not necessarily have a minimal screen and a very thick body.
Modern rugged smartphones have a fairly stylish and attractive appearance, which is successfully combined with good performance, and, of course, with protection from dust, moisture, temperature changes and other extreme loads.
Cat S61
The Cat S61 is one of the best rugged smartphones on the market. Its technical parameters speak for themselves, and its solid appearance completes the picture. But the main thing is the degree of protection of this device.
According to the military standard MIL Spec 810G and IP69 rating (by the way, this is the first phone with such a rating), it can withstand not only temperature changes and immersion in water, including salt water, but also high pressure water pressure, and its rubberized polycarbonate body in a metal frame will protect against falls.
It also contains several sensors that are not typical for regular phones - an air quality sensor, a thermal imager and a laser rangefinder. The cameras on this device are capable of filming underwater, and the battery is promising. As you can see, the Cat S61's parameters allow it to be used in the most extreme conditions.
Specifications : 5.2-inch screen, 1920 x 1080, Snapdragon 630 processor, 4 GB RAM, 64 GB, 16 MP main camera, 8 MP front camera, 4500 mAh battery, Android 8.0.
CAT S41
CAT S41, a slightly simpler technical model in the CAT line, is protected according to the IP68 standard, which means dust protection and immersion in water to a depth of more than 1 meter for more than half an hour. But, in addition, this device complies with Military Standard 810G (MIL-STD-810G), that is, it is protected from falls from heights, withstands high temperature changes, vibration, pressure and exposure to salt water. All this makes it an excellent companion in industrial and field conditions.
Specifications : 5-inch screen, 1080 x 1920, 16:9, MediaTek MT6757 Helio P20 processor, 3 GB RAM, 32 GB expandable up to 256 GB, 13 MP main camera, 8 MP front camera, 5000 mAh battery, Android 7.0
AGM X2
The X2 model was a step forward compared to the previous one. In addition to the degrees of protection, here you will find a record-breaking 6000 mAh battery, a solid Snapdragon 635 processor and quite a flagship amount of memory, both RAM (6 GB) and built-in (128 GB), as well as a decent set of cameras, including dual main and very powerful frontal. This device will easily interest those who value both security and high performance of phones. Based on its degree of protection and form factor, the AGM X2 case can be recommended for use by industrial workers.
Specifications : 5.5-inch screen, 1080 x 1920, 16:9, Snapdragon 635 processor, 3 GB RAM, 128 GB, main camera 12+12 MP, front 16 MP, battery 6000 mAh, Android 7.0
Sonim XP8
Sonim XP8 became the successor to the popular Sonim XP7 and received high levels of protection combined with good performance thanks to the Snapdragon 630 processor with 4 GB of RAM on board. Its distinctive feature is the presence of Sonim XPand Connector (allows you to connect various modules to it, such as a laser scanner and a channel switching module) and Sonim SecureAudio Connector (for secure connection of external speakers) and an Alarm button for emergency calling for help using GPS.
This device combines high-performance hardware with very high levels of protection, so it is not intended for ordinary users - it is rather intended for the industrial sector. It is certified according to IP68, IP69 and IP69K, as well as the Military 810G military standard, which means it is protected not only from dust and immersion in water, but also from pressure and temperature changes, salt water ingress, radiation, and so on.
Specifications : 5-inch screen, 1080 x 1920, 16:9, Snapdragon 630 processor, 4 GB RAM, 64 GB expandable up to 128 GB, 12 MP main camera, 8 MP front camera, 4900 mAh battery, Android 7.0
Kyocera DuraForce Pro
Kyocera DuraForce Pro is one of the latest models from a Japanese brand specializing in the production of rugged smartphones. This time the developers decided to demonstrate that the boundaries between flagships and devices with high degrees of protection are gradually blurring.
Therefore, in addition to a metal and polycarbonate body with rubberized parts, you will find here a rather large high-resolution screen (covered with durable sapphire glass), a dual camera, a good Snapdragon 617 processor and a fingerprint scanner. The device is protected according to the IP68 rating (from dust and immersion in water ), and, in addition, it complies with the military standard MIL-STD 810G, which means it can withstand changes in pressure and temperature, vibration, and so on, and, accordingly, is suitable for use in industrial environments.
Specifications : 5-inch screen, 1080 x 1920, 16:9, Snapdragon 617 processor, 2/3 GB RAM, 32 GB expandable up to 256 GB, 13 MP main camera, 5 MP front camera, 3240 mAh battery, Android 6.0
Blackview BV9000 Pro
The Chinese manufacturer Blackview has released another “monster” in its line of rugged smartphones - the BV9000 Pro model. Its feature was the presence of a special metal frame in an already durable rubberized body.
At the same time, the screen of the device has become larger, the frames are thinner, plus, the smartphone has acquired a dual camera and a fingerprint scanner, in accordance with modern trends. Blackview BV9000 Pro is protected according to the IP68 standard, but unfortunately has not yet received MIL-STD certificates, like some competitors. Compared to most rugged smartphones, this one looks very stylish and not at all rude, which also attracts attention.
Specifications : 5.7-inch screen, 1080 x 2160, 18:9, MediaTek MT6757CD Helio P25 processor, 6 GB RAM, 128 GB expandable up to 256 GB, main camera 13+5 MP, front 8 MP, battery 4180 mAh, Android 7.1
LG X Venture
LG decided to enter the rugged smartphone market with a budget device, and it made the right decision, since most devices in this category are quite expensive and not very accessible to ordinary users. The LG X Venture may not be as secure as the CAT, Kyocera or Sonim models (which are more likely intended for use in industrial environments), but it will be useful for those who lead an active lifestyle or play sports.
Its body is a clever combination of rubber, glass and metal, and the IP68 rating provides protection against dust and water immersion for up to 1 hour. Surprisingly, the developers claim that the LG X Venture model has passed 14 tests of the military standard MIL-STD 810G, which cannot but please potential owners. It should also be noted that this device is one of the thinnest among the protected ones and is equipped with a fingerprint scanner.
Specifications : 5.2-inch screen, 1080 x 1920, 16:9, Snapdragon 435 processor, 2 GB RAM, 32 GB expandable up to 256 GB, 16 MP main camera, 5 MP front camera, 4100 mAh battery, Android 7.0

A budget device from a Chinese manufacturer also made it into our rating of rugged smartphones. The gadget has a solid case made of metal and plastic, which protects the device from shocks, falls and submersion. In reviews, users say that even underwater photography can be done with this smartphone. The manufacturer claims that the device can remain at a depth of 2 m for about an hour. Gorilla Glass 3 was used to protect the screen. We could find fault with the not quite modern processor, HD resolution or cameras, but taking into account the price of the device we will not do this . At a relatively low cost (you can find it for $140), the smartphone turned out to be excellent: it will withstand fire and water, confidently handle a basic set of applications and, most importantly, can live without a power outlet for several days.

ZOJI is a new Chinese brand of rugged smartphones. After a successful debut with the Z6 and Z7, the company decided to release a more advanced new product. It has enough filling to perform most tasks, a good amount of memory and an excellent level of protection. The body of the device, like all armored smartphones, looks brutal. The screen is covered with Gorilla Glass 4 . The manufacturer installed good cameras and equipped the gadget with a power bank function - you can charge other devices with your smartphone. Among the features, we note the presence of a fingerprint scanner and a compass. There are few different sensors here, there is no NFC, but for many this doesn’t matter. The battery, to be honest, could be larger, but the existing capacity will be enough for 3-4 days of battery life.
Reference. ZOJI Z6 has a 4.7-inch screen with HD resolution, Gorilla Glass 4, is equipped with a 4-core processor, 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of main memory, IP 68. The device received a body made of plastic and rubber, a display from LG , protected Gorilla Glass 4 and a walkie-talkie function. Not a bad start for a device with such a tempting price. Let's continue. The device contains a fingerprint scanner , a compass, a magnetic field sensor , and a module from Sony . The hardware is average, there’s no point in commenting on it: the device won’t handle resource-intensive gaming applications, but it can handle browsers, instant messengers, social networks and other popular programs without any problems. We’ll praise the model for its autonomy, but we won’t criticize too much for the lack of NFC – after all, the device costs a little. In terms of price and quality ratio, this is one of the best rugged smartphones on the market.
LG X venture M710DS
The thinnest rugged smartphone was also included in the ranking of the best . The LG X venture M710DS model looks like an ordinary, so to speak, peaceful phone. It is thin and light. However, the manufacturer equipped the model with a protected rubberized case, assembled on a powerful metal frame.
Important! LG X venture M710DS is positioned as a smartphone for outdoor activities. It is not protected from water and dust to the highest standard; it has only IP67. Therefore, if you want to get maximum strength and endurance from your phone, it’s better to buy another model.
Don't expect the LG X venture M710DS to have fun while playing games. The device cannot show sufficient performance for this. However, you can listen to music, solve work problems, play simple games without restrictions.
- excellent screen, color rendition;
- good pictures;
- fingerprint scanner;

The manufacturer called this device the cheapest rugged smartphone (this fact remains controversial, but the device is really affordable). For the sake of affordable cost, I had to give up all sorts of bells and whistles. What we have here is a simple device in terms of filling, which has the highest level of protection from moisture and dust, and withstands temperature changes and exposure to chemically aggressive substances. The body is built on the basis of a solid metal frame, which smoothly transitions into rubberized overlays. You can get to the SIM card and memory card slots (they didn’t save space here, there are three separate slots ) after you unscrew the screws. The manufacturer offers two screwdrivers in the kit. We also note SOS key on the case. Interestingly, the device received NFC module , an event indicator, a compass and a barometer . If you need a reliable workhorse that you won't be afraid to take with you anywhere or drop, then this is a great option.
Blackview BV6000 (IP68)
A budget device from Blackview, which, according to open sources, received protection from water and dust according to the IP68 standard. The model is by no means new, but reviews about it are mostly positive.

Another good budget gadget. The powerful body made of metal and plastic (available in several colors) hides a more or less sufficient amount of memory and surprisingly good cameras. The gadget looks decent, is equipped with a fingerprint scanner , and HD resolution is not a minus here - on a 4.7-inch screen the pixel density will be more than 300 ppi . The battery capacity is not the highest, and this is the main disadvantage of the model.
Homtom HT20
When considering inexpensive budget smartphones with protection from shock, water and dust, you cannot ignore the Homtom HT20. The device offers a lot for its money. Firstly, the removable battery is a great convenience. Secondly, this is a thin, secure smartphone. Thirdly, the model received a 4.7-inch screen protected by tempered glass and 2 GB of RAM.
Important! Homtom HT20 can shoot underwater, work as a flashlight, has a fingerprint scanner and supports 4G networks. For the money you have to pay for this model, the functionality is simply excellent.
