TOP 15 best DVRs with two cameras -

A video recorder with two cameras records events occurring directly near the car (including from the side and rear).
This helps to avoid an accident on the road, and in the event of an accident that has already occurred, it helps to clarify the circumstances in the event of a collision between two or more vehicles.

After analyzing data from official test results (Rostest), as well as expert opinions and customer reviews, we have compiled a rating of the highest quality and most reliable models for 2021.

Some of them have a Wi-Fi module, others are equipped with a GPS signal receiver, others have a night shooting function, etc. Technical characteristics, advantages and disadvantages are presented for each device.

How to choose a DVR with two cameras in terms of price/quality ratio?

When choosing a suitable DVR, it is important to consider the following points:

  • Video resolution . To ensure that the “picture” is as clear as possible and not blurry, experts recommend purchasing a device with a resolution of at least HD (1280×720). Modern devices record in modes from HD 720p to 4K.
  • Viewing angle . The larger the viewing angle of both cameras, the more fully what is happening will be captured (full length and width), including accidents and minor incidents on the roads. The desired indicator is 360 degrees.
  • Display size . A large screen is more convenient for viewing recordings in detail, but due to its impressive size, the device can create discomfort. Therefore, you need to choose a display slowly, based on your personal needs and requirements.
  • Sound quality . This is one of the important criteria when an objective assessment of what is happening is important, for example, in order to prove the driver is right. If the microphone is weak or there is no noise reduction function, extraneous sounds may be present when playing the recording.
  • Volume of information media . To record and save as much visual information as possible, the memory card capacity must be at least 32 GB.
  • Additional functions . In addition to the basic options, the DVR can be equipped with a shock sensor, radar detector, parking mode, etc. The latter puts the camera into a sleeping state, but in the event of any events/incidents, “wakes up” the device and records what is happening around.
  • Manufacturer . The more popular the brand (with a high rating and a large number of positive reviews), the better and more efficient the DVR will work.

These are the main criteria that you should pay attention to before purchasing.

Battle of premium registrars from South Korea: popular BlackVue versus newcomer Thinkware

Today, the Russian DVR market is overcrowded with models from Chinese or Russian brands. Moreover, “Russian” in most cases means the same “Made in China”, only with a local, domestic name/logo. Yes, the Chinese know how to make decent recorders. But, as practice shows, for a number of reasons, it is mainly frankly weak models that end up on our market, both in terms of build quality and shooting quality. Unfortunately, we almost never talk about truly premium-level devices.

Another thing is registrars from China’s neighboring country, South Korea. Electronics (and, in particular, automobile “black boxes”) have gained fame from here for high-quality products. This can fully be attributed to both the premium models of the South Korean manufacturer BlackVue, which have long been known in Russia, and to newcomers (for our country) like Thinkware. This is also a premium brand, but not yet as popular as BlackVue.

BlackVue is in first place in recorder sales in South Korea, Thinkware is an honorable second. And if BlackVue relies on innovation and unique functionality of recorders, Thinkware attracts with slightly lower prices due to somewhat reduced functionality. Of course, both in the case of BlackVue and in the case of Thinkware we have a very high quality of assembly, materials and final video. Real Korean Hi-Tech!

In this article we will talk about two recent models from South Korean manufacturers: on the one hand, Thinkware F50 (8,990 rubles), on the other, BlackVue DR450-1CH (11,450 rubles). Why are they remarkable? ThinkWare F50 is the only DVR in Russia with premium video quality and a mid-segment price. And besides, it is the first DVR in Russia with ultra-high reliability. Indeed, Thinkware devices show a more than low defect rate - only 0.2% versus 5-10% for typical Chinese models. What, then, attracts the direct competitor - BlackVue DR450-1CH? And this is the most affordable premium DVR from the top and most reputable DVR brand in Russia - the South Korean BlackVue.

What they look like

Externally, the two South Korean premium recorders are very similar - both are enclosed in cylindrical cases, there are no screens, and the settings are set only through branded players for computers (already recorded on memory cards that come with the recorders). The Thinkware F50 is 4 cm shorter than the BlackVue DR450-1CH, which means the Thinkware model is more compact and less noticeable on the car glass than the BlackVue product. And immediately about memory cards. The Thinkware F50 accepts cards up to 64GB, but the BlackVue DR450–1CH accepts up to 128GB. Both models come with branded 8GB cards.

The BlackVue DR450-1CH has one “trick” in its design: here you can hang a lock (a real one) on a special eyelet on the case, or a seal - this is necessary so that no one else can remove the memory card. This is especially true when your car is driven by a hired driver or, for example, a courier. An original approach to security!

The Thinkware F50 is also reliable, but in a slightly different way: like other models from the brand, it has passed more than 140 endurance tests. Even military laptops are not tested this way!

How to film

From appearance to the main thing - the quality of the video. The Thinkware F50 is powered by a Sony Exmor matrix (Japan) with a physical size of 1/5.78 inches. The BlackVue DR450-1CH has the same matrix manufacturer, but the size is larger - 1/3 inch. In fact, this gives BlackVue clearer Full HD video at night and in the twilight: numbers can be read from 20 meters.

In general, BlackVue’s straight line readability range is the maximum in the registrar market! No model from any other brand gives greater distance to read license plates in a straight line. On average, ordinary inexpensive “Chinese” cars provide 13–15 meters of straight line legibility during the day and 8–12 meters at night. BlackVue has up to 25 meters during the day and up to 20 meters at night. The Thinkware F50 during the day produces exactly the same record result - up to 25 meters of license plate readability in a straight line. But at night this figure is lower than that of BlackVue, but still higher than that of most “Chinese” - up to 15–17 meters.

The BlackVue DR450-1CH also wins in terms of possible shooting options - in fragments of 1, 2 or 3 minutes. The Thinkware F50 offers shooting in 1-minute bursts only. But it can start recording by pressing a button on the body; the BlackVue DR450–1CH does not have such an “option”.

In daylight shooting the differences are almost unnoticeable. Both models, BlackVue and Thinkware, demonstrate high... and simply perfect detail, clarity and correct white balance. Indeed, the quality is premium - even expensive “Chinese” ones for 10–15 thousand rubles can only dream of this. The Thinkware F50 wins in terms of viewing width: 140 degrees diagonally versus 119 degrees for the BlackVue DR450-1CH. This means that in the case of the Thinkware model, a little more information will fit into the frame. But at the same time, the picture is slightly distorted at the edges - the classic fish-eye effect.

Example of video recording BlackVue DR450–1CH:

Example of video recording of Thinkware F50:

As you can see, both recorders demonstrate high quality shooting. BlackVue DR450–1CH allows you to view the license plate in rainy autumn weather, almost at dusk, at a distance of up to 20 meters. This is one of the best indicators on the market.

The Thinkware F50 shows a decent level of recording on a typical cloudy autumn day in low light conditions, but the readability distances of the numbers in a straight line at night and at dusk are somewhat shorter - about 15 meters.

Anything other than video?

Each model has its own “tricks”. The general thing is that both there is no GPS module. But it can be purchased separately for both BlackVue DR450–1CH and Thinkware F50. In the case of Thinkware, the GPS module also works as a radar detector - it tracks the location of speed cameras.

Of course, in both cases there is a G-sensor - it protects the so-called alarming (emergency) moments from cyclic overwriting. Files are stored on memory cards, on the Thinkware F50 in the TAT file system, and this is a serious advantage. With such a system, you don’t have to format the memory card at all. BlackVue uses regular FAT - you have to clean the card monthly to avoid failures.

Thinkware F50 also boasts a temperature sensor - it protects the device from overheating and can be very useful on a hot summer afternoon.

Both recorders have supercapacitors; they replace the usual lithium-ion batteries (like almost all “Chinese” ones). The advantages are obvious: the recorders start and work quietly even at sub-zero temperatures, and there is no need to warm up the interior first (while you are warming it up, someone might drive in!). But the disadvantage of this solution is also obvious: using both models you won’t be able to shoot outside the car’s interior; they cannot work autonomously.

And which one is better?

Both South Korean recorders show their best sides: excellent quality video recording, attention to materials and details, plus high reliability. However, there are not many differences between the models. The Thinkware F50 for 8,990 rubles is somewhat inferior in night video clarity, but the BlackVue DR450-1CH will cost more - 11,450 rubles. Otherwise, both samples are head and shoulders above Chinese registrars with similar or even higher price tags.

PS

Why is the article about Korean recorders, but first there is a photo from the American drift championship? The fact is that from 2021, BlackVue is not only a key sponsor, but also the sole supplier of recorders for Formula Drift cars, one of the most spectacular championships in motorsport.
