Oven with microwave function: how it works, device, prices and reviews

Microwave-oven “two in one”: advantages and disadvantages

The main advantage of such equipment can be called space saving - if an oven with a microwave function is installed, then a separate microwave is no longer needed, which means the space where it could stand is freed up.
It is also worth noting the small dimensions of such devices. When installed below, there is free space that can be used at your discretion. Such devices allow you to prepare almost any dish. However, there are some disadvantages, including? quite high cost and small selection in stores (compared to built-in ovens without additional functions). Another disadvantage is that using an oven combined with a microwave for heating is not very convenient. After all, in order to put a plate in it, for example, with soup, you have to bend almost to the floor itself. Breakdowns of such equipment occur more often, because if you take electrical equipment, then in addition to the heating element, the magnetron may also fail. In this case, the housewife is deprived of the opportunity not only to bake food, but also to warm it up. And they fit perfectly into the interior

In my studio apartment, this oven met all the parameters. It looks stylish, compact, and very convenient to use. Soon you will have to throw out the stove, since there is a microwave function and a bunch of different heating modes, whatever the food, and cooking them is not a problem in this oven, the main thing is that everything turns out quickly and tasty. Cleaning is pyrolytic, grease and plaque burns off at high temperatures, and then I just wipe with a damp cloth and it’s clean.

Design and principle of operation of free-standing and built-in ovens with microwave function

In terms of design, an oven with a microwave function differs from a conventional oven only in the presence of a magnetron - a gun that produces ultra-high-frequency pulses. They heat food differently than heating elements or gas burners.

In fact, only the liquid contained in the food is heated; the rest of the heating occurs through heat transfer from the liquid to the dish itself. For this reason, the microwave is not used for cooking, but mainly for heating food or defrosting food. Why take up space with an oven and microwave when you can install a “2 in 1”

Freestanding or built-in electric oven with microwave function

In such a household appliance, only lower heating elements can be installed or paired with upper heating elements intended for cooking, and a magnetron is mounted on the side. A built-in electric oven with a microwave is installed in residential premises where there is no main gas.

Gas freestanding or built-in oven with microwave function

The equipment is almost identical to the previous version, only, instead of heating elements, it contains gas burners. Such devices can be programmed for a specific time at which food will be ready. USEFUL TO KNOW!

In free-standing or built-in microwaves and two-in-one ovens, the magnetron can not only perform a heating function, but also serve as an auxiliary element that speeds up cooking.

Microwave (microwave) function - operating principle

An oven with a microwave function differs from its counterparts without this function only in that it contains a device called a magnetron, which is a source (generator) of microwave radiation.

In an electric or gas oven, any dish is heated by external heat from a gas burner or electric heating element. When using the microwave function in combination, it is not the food that is heated, but only the liquid it contains. Under the influence of ultra-high frequency waves, the speed of movement of water molecules sharply increases and the temperature increases sharply due to the friction of molecules, which leads to a reduction in cooking time.

Microwave radiation generated by the magnetron penetrates products to a depth of no more than 1.5 - 3.0 cm, strongly heating this surface layer. The entire dish is heated by internal heat transfer. Therefore, the microwave function is most often used when heating a ready-made dish or when it is necessary to defrost semi-finished products.

The figure shows a magnetron in red, red arrows are microwave radiation, a gray block is a power transformer with a magnetron cooling fan, and in the center of the working chamber there is a dish.

Main characteristics of microwave ovens

Gas or electric built-in ovens with microwaves are distinguished according to several parameters:

  • power and energy consumption class;
  • functionality;
  • availability of additional options;
  • type of cleaning of the internal surface;
  • dimensions and design.

Let's take a closer look at each of these parameters. It’s difficult, but you can even find a similar model design

Energy class and power consumption: what do these parameters affect?

It is known that energy consumption class A? the most economical. Almost all modern built-in electric ovens with microwaves have exactly this class, and more expensive ones can even be labeled as A+ or A++.

Power is an important parameter, especially for those who cook in the oven very often. The higher this indicator, the faster the food will be cooked. However, we should not forget that energy consumption will also increase. This is the data contained on the cover of the technical passport

Functionality of ovens with microwave “two in one”

Of the functions that are necessarily present in an oven with a microwave, we note the presence of:

  • various combinations of operating modes. This can be a grill, microwave, oven or any combination;
  • established cooking programs (from 1 to 100 different dishes with automatic cooking);
  • convection;
  • blowing the outer walls to avoid damage to the kitchen set;
  • child protection and automatic shutdown when opening;
  • interior lighting, which can be regular or LED.

Backlighting is one of the most useful functions of an oven with a microwave. There can be many additional options. It is especially convenient when telescopic guides are installed for the baking sheet, eliminating the need to hold the hot baking sheet with your hands. The on-off programming mode is also convenient. It allows you to place a dish in a freestanding or built-in 2-in-1 microwave oven in the evening in its raw form and set a command. At a certain time, the device will turn on, and by the time the owners wake up, the dish will be ready.

Separation of devices by type of cleaning

Today you can buy an oven with a microwave function of three types of cleaning. Now let's look at them in detail.

Manual - everything is clear here. We take a sponge, detergent and do everything ourselves. This option is the cheapest. Manual cleaning devices are the cheapest

Pyrolytic is the most expensive option. The temperature inside the oven rises above 500? C, as a result of which all the fat burns. As a result, the housewife only needs to sweep the ashes out of the closet. Pyrolytic cleaning. After high temperature you only need to remove the ash

Catalytic – average price category. Fat accumulates on special plates. In order to clean the stove, it is enough to change them. Catalytic cleaning involves periodic replacement of filters

Dimensions and design of similar household appliances

The manufacturer offers 3 types of cabinets with different dimensions:

  • compact, the width of which is ? 45 cm;
  • standard – 60 cm;
  • enlarged – 90 cm.

The design can vary radically, so there can be no advice here - everyone should choose what suits the interior of their kitchen.

IMPORTANT ! Home appliance stores offer to buy a built-in oven with a microwave function only for apartments equipped with an electrical outlet for stoves. Therefore, if there is a need for a “2 in 1” device, and gas is supplied to the home, then it makes sense to purchase two different devices that will be used as needed. The rest of the time you can use a regular stove.

What characteristics should you pay attention to when choosing an oven with a microwave function?

The most important parameters for such devices:

  1. Dimensions . Compared to a conventional microwave oven, an oven with an identical function has a smaller cooking chamber. Therefore, for large families you should buy a larger oven. If the appliance is built-in, there should be space on the sides so that hot air can escape freely. Otherwise the oven will overheat.
  2. Power . The higher the power, the faster the device will heat up. It takes less time to prepare the dish. However, high power consumes a lot of electricity. The optimal energy saving class is A. The most profitable option is A++, but such equipment is more expensive.
  3. Type of cleansing . The oven must be washed frequently to remove accumulated grease. The standard way to do this is quite long and difficult. Devices with microwave function have several built-in cleaning methods. The first is hydrolysis, its essence is to dissolve fat with steam. To do this, you need to put a container with water inside and turn on the heating mode. After this, dirt can be easily removed with a cloth and a small amount of detergent. The second is parolysis, which involves heating, burning and turning fat into ash. Then it is removed with a dry sponge. The third is catalysis and takes a minimum of time. The body has special plates built into it that absorb excess fat. They should be changed regularly.
  4. Safety . Modern stoves are equipped with a function to block hands from entering the heating zone. When the door is opened, the heating switches off automatically. If there are children in the house, the child lock feature will become indispensable. The child will not be able to open the door independently or change the current program. The door, coated with 4 layers on the outside, remains cold all the time, and the thin double-glazed windows get very hot.
  5. Additional functions. Ovens with a micro-oven function have many additional options. The most useful are: grill - equipped with an open spiral on top to obtain a crispy crust; convection - the air inside the chamber moves, evenly distributing heat; turbo grill - grill + convection; double boiler; the presence of telescopic guides - the grates automatically slide out of the oven; delayed start; sound notification when opening the door; trouble indicator.

In addition to useful functions, some manufacturers introduce a lot of options that owners of such household appliances practically do not use. Although the bells and whistles significantly increase the cost of the oven.

Tips for choosing a microwave oven

The first thing you should pay attention to is the number of cooking modes. The more there are, the better. Of course, the cost will be higher. The stepwise switching is also important - the addition of temperature should occur smoothly. The pyrolytic cleaning system is preferable, despite its high cost. And the most important advice: if you decide to buy such household appliances, you should not save on them.

It is better to choose a higher quality and more expensive model than to subsequently bite your elbows, suffering with a cheap option. After all, such devices differ from the combination of a conventional oven and microwave with functions available only to “2 in 1” devices. Rotary mechanisms of control knobs are more convenient than touch ones - their settings are smoother

The technique is really very good. It can do a lot of things - there are 12 operating modes alone, and the built-in microwave makes it simply universal. The controls are simple; understanding the text displays with touch controls and the Assist menu turned out to be a piece of cake. The multi-point meat probe and doneness sensor help you achieve fantastic cooking results.

pros

Independent, with microwave, there is a grill and a convention, combined modes, PerfectBake and PerfectRoast, DishAssist, EcoClean Direct. Protection - automatic shutdown and child lock.

Minuses

ControlRing is not a convenient solution for a switch; telescopes are only level 1

We didn’t really choose, we decided that the combination of an oven and microwave was what we needed. We've been using the cabinet for over a month and don't regret the purchase. In terms of care and maintenance, simple, complete self-cleaning does an excellent job. The controls are intuitive, and it’s easy to select a mode for any dish. With DishAssist it’s easy to select the temperature and cooking time, with PerfectBake and PerfectRoast, baked goods and meat are under control, they won’t dry out or be soggy - very convenient things. The display can be viewed from any angle, all information is easy to read. The cabinet is safe from any side, there is an automatic shutdown and locking, and it is also impossible to get burned on the door, it practically does not heat up. I recommend!

Leading manufacturers and most popular models on the Russian market

Until relatively recently, the brands Bosh and Siemens were the most popular among Russian consumers, but today they have a very serious competitor - Veko. Despite the fact that this manufacturer has been on the market for a long time, a sharp increase in popularity has been noticed recently. Let's look at some models from these brands.

Microwave oven and its characteristics

This is what “Bosch CMG633BB1” looks like. Oven with microwave function “Bosch CMG633BB1” is from the middle price category. Electric independent oven with a volume of 45 liters, energy class A and a power of 3.65 kW. Quite a functional household appliance. In addition to the microwave (1000 W), there is a grill, convection, defrosting, 6 heating modes and 14 cooking programs.

Rotary switches, touch display, timer with shutdown. We especially note the presence of a child lock function, a safety shutdown and a wall cooling fan. One of the minuses is the lack of a spit, which, in the opinion of our editors, is an omission if there is a grill. But overall, it’s a fairly complete and functional model.

Bosch CMG633BB1

Differences between the Siemens CM636GBW1 model

Oven with microwave function “Siemens CM636GBW1” You don’t even need to describe the oven with microwave function “Siemens CM636GBW1”, all the characteristics are absolutely identical to the previous oven.

However, what is interesting! Despite the fact that built-in ovens with a microwave function “Bosh” cannot be called cheap, this model “Siemens CM636GBW1” is almost 2 times more expensive. There is nothing to explain this other than overpaying for the brand.

"Beko BCW 15500 X" ? ideal price/quality ratio Another oven with a microwave function is Beko BCW 15500 X. Electric independent oven with microwave capacity 40 liters. Has 10 heating modes. The controls are completely touch-sensitive. Otherwise, there are no differences from the previous options, except for the cost - it is 2 times lower than the first option - an oven

Microwave oven Beko

Manufacturers of ovens with magnetrons

Devices that combine the functions of an oven and microwave are classified as multifunctional complex devices. There are currently only independent electrical cabinets on the Russian market. The chamber does not have a rotating tray, which ensures even heating by microwaves. You cannot enable multiple modes at the same time. The heating process in the oven takes longer than in a special chamber.

You can choose an elite multifunctional oven from manufacturers Miele, Gaggenau, De Dietrich. In the middle price category there are companies Samsung, Bosch, AEG, Beko. Models available to clients with average incomes are created by Neff, Ariston, Zanussi, Electrolux. We invite you to get acquainted with the Samsung microwave oven in the video.

Reviews about the new devices are different. There are authors who believe that each device should perform its function without compromising quality. For owners of tiny kitchens, a multi-oven is an opportunity to use kitchen appliances that cannot be squeezed in any other way.

Choosing a suitable oven with a microwave (microwave) function

The process of choosing an oven with a microwave function differs little from the process of choosing a conventional oven. Since this type is most often chosen in order to save kitchen space, we will give recommendations with an emphasis on this feature.

Restrictions in the kitchen space can be found in old houses, the so-called “Khrushchev” and “Brezhnevka” buildings, as well as country houses. Based on this, the most preferred type in terms of the source of energy used is gas ovens with a microwave function.

pros

  • relatively safe use of gas or a gas cylinder in conditions of old electrical wiring (an old house) or connecting a house to the electrical network without the participation of professionals (private residential or country house)
  • gas prices are significantly lower than electricity prices

Minuses

  • Uneven oven heating
  • in most cases they are inferior to electric ones in terms of the number of functions

If you are confident in the quality of the electrical wiring and electrical panel and want to save kitchen workspace for other needs, then we recommend choosing an electric oven with a microwave function.

pros

  • uniform heating of the lower part and side walls using electric heating elements, in the upper part there is a grill, and on the rear wall there is a convection fan (in some models 2-a) which distributes hot air flows evenly throughout the entire volume
  • a huge number of modes allowing you to prepare a wide variety of dishes

Minuses

  • high price of electricity
  • difficulties associated with connection, such as the need for grounding, a separate power line, etc.

Since an oven with a microwave is chosen to save space, it is recommended to choose one that is independent of the hob so as not to be limited in its location.

Depending on where you are going to place the oven and the presence of children in the house, you need to decide on the availability of child protection.

Once you have decided on the type, location of the oven, the presence or absence of child protection, you can proceed to the parameters that determine ease of use, functionality and appearance:

  • type of cleaning
  • door type
  • timer type
  • presence of telescopic guides
  • availability of grill and its type
  • presence of a skewer
  • number and variety of programs
  • tangential mechanism
  • design

And of course, an important parameter that influences the decision to choose a specific model is the price.

Types of ovens with built-in microwave ovens

The types of such kitchen appliances fully correspond to the options of the ovens themselves - microwave ovens are successfully built into both gas and electric ovens. Each variety has its own advantages and disadvantages:

  • If the house is completely gasified, then using a gas oven with a microwave will be more justified economically - the device itself is somewhat cheaper, and the cost of natural gas is incomparably lower than electricity.

Connecting to the electrical network does not require a separate powerful power line with the installation of an additional machine - the power of the built-in microwave oven is not so high.

This is especially true where there are certain difficulties with old wiring or with the presence of a ground loop.

  • At the same time, electric ovens with a built-in microwave are distinguished by better uniformity of heating of the internal volume, accuracy of setting parameters, and a much larger variety of useful options.

Their installation will not require an approval procedure with gas supply organizations.

But in this case, a powerful separate power line equipped with a circuit breaker is mandatory. An indispensable condition is the presence of reliable grounding.

Ovens with microwave ovens can be combined with cooking surfaces (dependent), or autonomous (independent).

  • The only advantage of the dependent ones is a unified control system with a hob and a design consistent with the general style.

There are many more disadvantages.

Thus, there is no possibility to vary the location of the oven in the kitchen interior. The choice of built-in oven models with microwave function is limited to a very narrow product range. In addition, the failure of one of the devices or the common control panel will lead to the loss of functionality of the entire “complex” as a whole.

  • Independent built-in ovens with a microwave function are much more popular.

Their installation, especially electric ones, is in no way tied to the location of the hob. They can be built into any kitchen furniture, and at the height that seems optimal to the owners - it is not entirely convenient to bend down when using the microwave frequently on a daily basis.

In addition, such ovens are completely independent in terms of control and functionality.

Furniture for a built-in oven

The built-in oven requires additional furniture. You can buy a ready-made cabinet or order a complete kitchen set with cabinets for a built-in oven.

The built-in oven has a standard height of 600 mm. Therefore, when installing it in the lower cabinet, there is space left. As a rule, a low drawer 10-20 cm high is made under the oven.

For the built-in oven, a pencil case is made at the top “at eye level”. It can be multifunctional. Have closed and open shelves, space for a built-in microwave oven.

Related article: Gray matte kitchens

Main characteristics

First of all, you need to decide where you will put the cabinet. The standard height of an oven with a microwave is 55-60 cm. If there is very little space, then you can choose compact models - 40-45 cm in height. And their depth is standard - 50-55 cm. There are also double ovens a little less than a meter high.

  • Useful volume.

The most popular models with a volume of 40-60 liters. This cabinet is small in size and has enough volume for cooking. For comparison, in conventional electric ovens, as a rule, 50-66 liters. Those. you can cook in exactly the same quantity as in a conventional oven.

  • Energy class.

Agree, no one wants to pay huge sums for electricity. Therefore, pay attention to this parameter when choosing. The energy consumption class is designated in Latin letters from A to C. The most economical are marked as A++.

Since we have 2 in 1, the amount of energy consumption will be equal to the consumption of the grill + microwave. The grill comes in power from 1050 to 3000 kW. The higher the power, the faster the dish will fry. Microwave ranges from 600 to 1500 W.

This parameter affects the speed of heating and cooking. Also pay attention to the connection power of the device. Modern ovens require at least 3 kW.

When buying such an oven, be sure to buy special dishes that are compatible with both oven and microwave modes.

Choosing a household assistant

The process of choosing an oven with a microwave function differs little from the process of choosing a conventional oven. Since this type is most often chosen in order to save kitchen space, we will give recommendations with an emphasis on this feature.

  • uneven heating of the oven;
  • in most cases they are inferior to electric ones in the number of functions;
  • high price of electricity;
  • difficulties associated with connection, such as the need for grounding, a separate power line, etc.
  • If you are confident in the quality of the electrical wiring, electrical panel and circuit breakers, and want to save kitchen workspace for other needs, then we recommend choosing an electric oven with a microwave function.

    Since an oven with a microwave is chosen to save space, it is recommended to choose one that is independent of the hob so as not to be limited in its location.

    Depending on where you are going to place the oven and the presence of children in the house, you need to decide on the availability of child protection.

    Expensive, but very convenient and reliable technology, I realized this from the first minute of use. We bought this particular model because it doesn’t take up much space, has rich functionality, and great capabilities for preparing different dishes. It is a pleasure to operate, the display is quite informative and clear, there is information about modes, temperature and cooking time. I was pleased with the metal guides - the baking tray is easy to take out. A door with a closer, smooth and quiet closing of the door is ensured for the entire service life of the device.
