What kind of “beast” is this mobile air conditioner?

This is a universal monoblock, not strictly tied to one point.
The operating principle is reminiscent of everyone’s favorite No Frost system in household refrigerators. Only the compressor is much more powerful and the cooled air does not enter hermetically sealed small cabinets, but directly into the room, and even with temperature, strength and direction of flow adjusted. Another feature: the heat from the “back wall” should not dissipate into the surrounding space, therefore it is forcibly removed to the street through a window or wall, for which all mobile air conditioners are equipped with special sliding plastic pipes. The only way. Otherwise, efficiency is zero, and energy costs will simply go down the drain (not a corrugated one).

The condensate evaporates and is removed outside automatically along with heated air (depending on the model) or collected in a special container for subsequent drainage. Alternatively, use a drainage hose to constantly remove moisture.

A small clarification: do not confuse mobile air conditioners with air conditioning humidifiers, which are ineffective in terms of actual cooling (without hoses, but also without a compressor), operating on the principle of air washers.

Pros and cons of a mobile air conditioner

Advantages

  • Can be easily moved between rooms, cooling the area that is currently needed.
  • The best option for rooms where a conventional split system cannot be installed. For example, external air conditioning units violate the aesthetics of the facades of architectural monuments. Therefore, in the centers of many cities there is a ban on their installation. A floor-mounted mobile air conditioner will be your only salvation.
  • You can do without drilling walls and other “joys” associated with installation work.
  • Buying a mobile air conditioner for an apartment is much cheaper than buying a stationary one.
  • A home mobile air conditioner is an ideal solution for rental housing.

Flaws

  • A mobile air conditioner without an outdoor unit is less efficient than a stationary one.
  • When the heat removal hose is routed out the window or door, a gap remains through which hot air again enters the room. For maximum efficient cooling, you need to figure out how to seal it. Some people seal the gap with film or other similar materials. A radical option is to make a hole in the wall for the hose. Then the mobile air conditioner begins to play the role of a stationary one

Control systems for mobile (floor-standing) air conditioners

The simplest mobile (floor-standing) systems are equipped with electromechanical control devices - buttons and knobs for temperature control. Many people like the simplicity and convenience of such models, because there is nothing superfluous in the control system and adjusting the microclimate in the room is simple.

However, the cheapest air conditioners of this type do not have protection against frequent starts, that is, there is no delay of 3 minutes. Frequent starts can lead to engine malfunctions and equipment failure. When turning off such devices, you need to make sure that the mobile air conditioner does not turn on on its own. Mechanically controlled devices are uneconomical.

If the unit is equipped with an electronic system, then it can be controlled using a remote control from a distance not exceeding 8 m. The advantage of such monoblocks is more accurate control of the temperature in the room. There is also an additional option - setting the device to operate on a timer (24 or 12 hours). If you wish, you can set a program so that the device turns off after 2 hours, when you are already asleep. Or, conversely, set the air conditioner so that it turns on half an hour before you return home. This way, when you arrive, the temperature in the living room, bedroom or kitchen will be comfortable.

What operating modes can be present in a mobile air conditioner?

The list of functions built into modern climate control equipment can be varied:

  • cooling mode;
  • heat;
  • air dehumidification;
  • ventilation;
  • cleaning

There are some restrictions regarding mobile air conditioners - these devices cannot always be used in all conditions. It is recommended to learn in advance, even before purchasing the device, about all the capabilities and operating modes.

Cooling mode

Air cooling is the main operating mode of the air conditioner, present in all models. It is used only in summer, because in winter there is no need to artificially cool the room - it is easier and more economical to receive cold air through a slightly open window.

To lower the air temperature in monoblocks, the capabilities of a vapor compression refrigeration machine are used. This device is similar to units installed in conventional refrigerators. Manufacturers recommend turning on the air conditioner at temperatures between 17 and 30°C. Less commonly, the boundaries of the operating range are slightly wider - from 16 to 35°C. If the room temperature significantly exceeds the specified limits, then malfunctions occur in the operation of the device, and it will not be possible to obtain the desired effect from the operation of the device. Breakdown due to violation of the rules of use is not a warranty case, so you will have to repair the device at your own expense.

If the room temperature drops to the value you set, the air conditioner turns off cooling. After this, the device switches to ventilation mode. The cooling mode will be automatically activated when the room temperature exceeds the set value.

Heating mode

In Russian conditions, heating mode may be required at any time of the year. Mobile devices successfully cope with heating the room, not inferior to fan heaters and oil radiators. Moreover, they can be used all year round.

To heat the air, mobile air conditioners can be equipped with electric heaters (most often) or produce heating operating in heat pump mode, as is done in stationary split systems.

Built-in electric heaters, which mobile air conditioners use to heat the air, work great at any temperature. The heaters are steel heating elements or a heating coil. This design is durable, reliable and unpretentious.

There are models of air conditioners that heat air in heat pump mode, that is, in the process of reversing the refrigeration cycle. In this case, excess cold is removed from the room through a hose. This economical heating method can be used at temperatures between 5 and 21°C. To operate such devices in winter or autumn, “gapless” installation of climate control equipment will be required. If you run the hose through a slightly open window, then due to the draft, the air conditioner’s power may not be enough for heating.

How quickly the desired temperature is reached depends on the fan speed. Typically, mobile air conditioning systems have three speeds:

  • high;
  • average;
  • low.

Microprocessor-controlled devices operate in automatic mode. It is enough to indicate the desired temperature, and the microprocessor will analyze the actual and set values, selecting the desired operating mode: cooling, heating or ventilation without heat treatment.

Dehumidification mode

All mobile monoblocks offered on the climate control market are capable of reducing air humidity. Dehumidification is useful in cases where you need to avoid condensation on walls and ceilings, so that wallpaper does not fade and paint does not crack. If you turn on the air conditioner in the room where clothes are dried after washing, textiles will dry in a matter of hours, even during rain and excess humidity. It is useful to dehumidify the air using mobile systems in pantries with food supplies: this allows you to protect bulk products such as flour, sugar, and salt from dampness and spoilage.

Air dehumidification is performed in cooling mode. But most models are equipped with a special function - removing moisture from the air without reducing the room temperature. In this case, the fan rotation speed is adjusted automatically. For maximum drying efficiency, keep doors and windows tightly closed.

In this mode, the surfaces of the evaporative heat exchanger are cooled to a temperature of 3°C. The air circulating in the air conditioner comes into contact with the cold plates, and moisture condenses on them. The condensate can then be removed in various ways. Some models of air conditioning units do not have a water tank; in them, moisture immediately flows onto a heated condenser, turns into steam and is removed through a hose outside the room.

In such a system, the refrigeration cycle is the most efficient. Other models of mobile devices have a tank in which condensation accumulates. If the air humidity is high, the container is filled with water within 2–3 hours, after which the compressor stops working. This means you need to empty the accumulated water from the tank.

If a device equipped with a tank is used in one place, then it is more profitable to create a stationary water drainage system. To do this, attach a hose to the drain pipe of the air conditioner, which is connected to the sewer. The sewer drain must be located below the drain pipe. After this, there is no need to control the filling level of the tank: the device does not turn off, since there is no overflow, and you can forget about the procedure for emptying the tank. If the air conditioner is additionally equipped with a pump, the accumulated water can rise to a height of 4 m or higher. This allows the use of mobile monoblocks to reduce humidity in the basements of private houses.

Air purification mode

The filtration function of mobile air conditioning systems is not yet sufficiently developed compared to stationary split air conditioners. However, all mobile devices have coarse air filters. The design of the filter element consists of a plastic frame with a fine polymer mesh. Filters require periodic maintenance - they must be washed with water. It is acceptable to use a neutral detergent.

When temporarily installing the device, the hose should be routed into a slightly open window. Stationary installation involves outlet through a hole in the glass.

For additional fine cleaning, you can equip the existing filter with a special insert made from materials with electrostatic properties or using activated carbon. After a year, these inserts should be replaced with new ones because they cannot be cleaned or restored.

Some models of mobile climate control equipment are equipped with built-in filters to remove fine impurities. There are also devices with a unipolar ionizer. They allow you to clean the air from suspended particles by transferring a negative charge to them so that these particles settle on the floor or walls that have a positive charge. Negative ions in small quantities are beneficial for humans: they create a surge of strength and a feeling of vigor.

Types and design of mobile air conditioners

By design, mobile climate control devices are of two types:

Mobile monoblock.

Mobile split system.

Mobile monoblock

The first type is similar to a window air conditioner, but there is a difference: the units in a mobile monoblock are located vertically, not horizontally. The ventilation mechanism and evaporator are located in the upper compartment, and the lower compartment is occupied by a condenser, compressor and fan that removes heat. The compartments are separated by a metal partition.

The upper section of the air conditioner has an air intake through which air enters from the room. Filtered and cooled air is returned to the room through openings equipped with louver guides.

In order to cool the condenser, air enters the lower part of the device from the rear side. There it is heated by a condenser and discharged outside through an air vent, which must be discharged either into a special hole or out a window. The corrugated air duct is similar to a vacuum cleaner hose, its diameter is 15 cm and its length is 1.5 m.

In a wide variety of monoblocks, there are models capable of processing only the internal atmosphere in the room, and models that supply the room with air from the street. In the second case, the air conditioner has two corrugated hoses: fresh air enters through one, and heated air is discharged outside through the second hose.

During operation of the mobile air conditioning system, condensation forms. It accumulates in a 4–5 liter container located at the bottom of the device. For normal operation of the compressor, it is necessary to periodically drain the accumulated liquid.

When a hose is routed through a crack in a slightly open window sash or balcony door for temporary installation, cooled air may leak. Therefore, this method is not the most convenient and uneconomical.

Some air conditioners come with an airlock, which allows hoses to be routed through the casement window without creating a gap. The airlock can be purchased separately. It is suitable for different versions of casement windows.

Application of an airlock for air removal:

“Gapless” laying of communications is suitable for permanent installation. Some monoblock models are equipped with special plugs that can be installed in the sliding window frame from below or from the side. The length of this additional part is adjustable to precisely fit the size of the window. The hose is inserted into the hole in the plug itself.

An alternative option for outputting communications is through a hole cut in the glass or punched in the wall. Fittings are installed in such holes to make it easier to remove the hose. After dismantling the climate control equipment, the “vents” are closed with plugs.

Mobile split system

This air conditioner consists of two blocks: internal and external. Unlike a conventional split air conditioner, the mobile system has a slightly different device: the compressor is located in the indoor unit. This unit, installed inside the room, contains the refrigeration unit, and the external unit, located outside the room, houses the condenser and fan.

For ease of transportation, both parts of the mobile device are equipped with small wheels. The blocks are connected using freon pipes and electrical wiring. All communications are protected by a single outer shell. The length of such a hose reaches 2–3 m.

If temporary installation of a mobile split system is required, the external element is placed in a utility room or secured outside the window. For fastening, screws are used that are screwed into the wall, or slings that are fixed to the heating radiator. For ease of installation on the facade of a building, some models are equipped with special brackets. Installation of such devices requires the help of industrial climbers.

Temporary installation of a split air conditioner involves laying communications through a window (fully open or through the gap between the sash and the frame). If the house has windows with wooden frames and glass on glazing beads, you can cut a groove in the lower part of the frame and pass a hose through it. In addition, there are special plugs that are inserted between the sliding window frames and allow communication between the two blocks. Then you can completely close the window without damaging communications.

The most difficult option: laying interblock hoses through a hole in the outer wall. The diameter of the hole should be about 8–12 cm. In this case, you will need to separate the blocks, which is only possible when installing self-sealing flanges on the indoor block. This complex procedure should be performed at a service center.

How to choose a mobile air conditioner?

Experts recommend considering the following parameters when choosing a mobile air conditioner:

  • type - there are models without an air vent and with an air vent, which ventilate the room more effectively;
  • operating modes - the air conditioner works only for cooling, or is equipped with additional options (heating, dehumidification, ventilation, automatic and night mode);
  • power - varies from 1 kW to 7 kW;
  • control - using a remote control, touch panel or wi-fi;
  • mobility - the ease of moving the device depends on the weight and dimensions.

How to calculate the required power

When choosing a mobile air conditioner, consider:

  • volume (area x ceiling height);
  • room illumination;
  • number of heat emitters (people, computers, televisions).

The amount is determined from 2 indicators: the product of volume and illumination coefficient and additional heat radiation. The illumination coefficient is 30-35-40 watts/square meter, which corresponds to the north-east (west)-south sides of the windows. Infrared radiation from a person, on average, is 125 watt/hour, a computer is 350 watt/hour, a TV is 700 watt/hour. Brochures indicate a BTU of 0.2931 watts.

Popular manufacturing companies

Buying equipment from a reliable brand is the key to its long service life.

The following brands have earned the trust of customers:

  • Electrolux - produces compact models with high energy efficiency;
  • Timberk is a Swedish company producing climate control equipment, which has a large selection of models at budget prices;
