The headache of every owner of a country house is the issue of uninterrupted power supply to the boiler and other equipment.
Unfortunately, the problem of constant power outages, at any time, is almost the norm for many.
First of all, this applies to private houses and cottages. If in summer you can somehow survive this, then in winter during the heating period, the disappearance of voltage can be critical for your heating system.
UPS or generator
This problem can be solved by installing an uninterruptible power supply. Simply called a UPS, uninterruptible power supply or inverter for a boiler.
Those who want to make a choice in favor of a generator, think about what will happen if the power goes out when you are not at home? How to switch the boiler to backup power in this case?
You will need models with an autostart system and other automation, but they cost completely different money.
In addition, often the lights are turned off not for long, but for a maximum of half an hour. You just take the generator out, fill it with gas, plug it in, start it, and all this in the bitter cold.
And in terms of the quality of the output voltage (frequency, sine wave), generators are noticeably inferior to inverters.
Therefore, the choice here is obvious for many.
Operating principle of uninterruptible power supply
The device is necessary to monitor the voltage in the network, filter out surges and interference. And in the event of a power failure, supply the electricity stored in the battery to the input of gas automation and equipment. At the same time, the uninterruptible power supply remains connected to the network and accumulates battery energy. When triggered, it removes energy from the battery and converts direct current 12-24V into alternating current, with a voltage of 220V.
Uninterruptible power supply consists of several blocks:
- input circuit with line filter. Expensive models use an input voltage stabilizer;
- Charger. The mains input voltage is converted to 12V or 24V, and the current is converted from AC to DC. Part of the battery energy is used to power the switch and voltage sensor in the input network;
- inverter and battery. The battery accumulates and stores charge. The inverter unit removes the accumulated energy and converts it into 220V alternating voltage.
In expensive models, switching is performed using a key; in budget models, a relay is used.
At the output of the uninterruptible power supply there is a filter - corrector. With its help, interference and signals that enter the line during operation of the inverter are filtered out. Sealed gel batteries are almost always used to store energy. They can be either built into the uninterruptible power supply housing or located side by side according to the external circuit.
UPS design diagrams
The price of uninterruptible power supplies for household appliances and heating boilers may vary even within devices of the same power. The reason is different design. As a result, uninterruptible power supplies differ:
- by switching response time;
- efficiency;
- Electricity conversion efficiency;
- battery life;
- characteristics of the output voltage.
VFD system UPS
Popular and simple are backup or offline uninterruptible power supplies, called VFDs according to the IEC 62040-3 standard. This is a battery with a charger, a switching relay and an inverter. When there is a power outage in the network or a sharp drop in potential, the inverter starts generating alternating voltage. There are no filters or stabilizers at the input and output of the device.
Operation occurs slowly - the inverter supplies power to the heating boiler no faster than 4 ms. The level of output voltage stabilization is within 20%.
The sine wave of the current signal is obtained with a comb; there is no frequency stabilization. For a gas boiler with new capacitors on the control board, problems usually do not arise if potential deviations in the network do not exceed 10%. For gas automation of old boilers with sagging capacitors, the burner may turn off before the UPS starts working.
The advantage of the scheme is its simplicity of design. The disadvantages include low efficiency - 50-60% and accelerated battery life. When a gas boiler operates in constant charge-discharge mode 24 hours a day, the battery wears out within a couple of years.
UPS for heating systems class VI
More complex uninterruptible power supplies of the “Line-interactiv” or VI type according to the IEC 62040-3 standard. Linear-interactive units provide stabilization of the input voltage. Thanks to this, the electronics of the unit operate more steadily.
The quality of the signal generated by the inverter is higher, but there is no stabilization of the voltage frequency at the output of the UPS. The signal already looks like a sine wave. The switching time to operating mode is 2-4 ms, and the efficiency is 70%. This type of UPS is most often used to protect and support computer and network equipment.
Linear-interactive blocks are conventionally divided into groups according to how the inverter generates the output voltage to power the heating boiler in emergency battery mode. In simpler uninterruptible power supplies, the output voltage is somewhat reminiscent of a sinusoid in waveform. The passport for the device indicates that this is a UPS with an approximate sinusoid.
The second group includes uninterruptible power supplies in which the inverter supplies voltage with a corrected sine wave to the heating equipment. Uninterruptible power supplies are more expensive, but they are recommended for powering gas boilers and devices that have:
- electric motors;
- solenoid valve;
- fan;
- electromechanical drive.
VFI class uninterruptible power supplies
The most expensive and more advanced UPSs are the “On-Line” type or VFI class according to the IEC 62040-3 standard. They differ from the two previous types of uninterruptible power supplies in 3 positions:
- signal frequency stabilization is provided at the input and output of the UPS unit;
- when operating in battery mode, the inverter supplies the gas boiler with a pure sine wave voltage;
- The UPS operation scheme does not involve switching from an external network to battery power. In an emergency, power will be supplied to the gas boiler without delay, which means the risk of an accident is minimized.
The operating efficiency is almost 90%, and the battery in a gentle mode “lives” on average twice as long as that of previous types of UPS. The disadvantages of uninterruptible power supplies include high cost and the need for reliable grounding. The advantages include the fact that “On-Line” type blocks can be used for a wide range of equipment, including gas boilers.
UPS from a computer for a gas boiler
Just do not confuse this uninterruptible power supply with a UPS for a computer. The computer version uses built-in batteries.
They do not provide the full battery life that is required. Therefore, if you think “I’ll buy a more powerful UPS for my computer in the summer, and in the winter I’ll connect the boiler through it,” this is a misconception and a mistake.
Even if someone advises you to assemble a circuit for a computer UPS connected to external batteries, do not do it. Computer models have an approximated sinusoid, which will have a bad effect on the operation of the equipment. But more on this a little later.
Boiler equipment requires a power source with external batteries. At the same time, with the possibility of increasing power.
They will provide sufficient battery life.
What is the operating principle of a UPS? It converts DC voltage from batteries into AC voltage. In the event of a power outage, all consumers, without time delays, instantly switch to working from the battery.
And when voltage is supplied back from the network, the inverter automatically returns to normal power mode. This recharges the discharged batteries.
Reserve models
Among all the backup UPSs for heating boilers, it is worth highlighting Teplokom from the Bastion company, wow 500 u, IBPS 12 and electric back ups be700g rs.
Bastion teplocom 300
The Russian backup UPS switches in one second. It is popular for its reliable build, small size and stable performance.
This is a UPS with external batteries, which must be purchased separately. In addition, if the voltage in the house fluctuates, manufacturers recommend installing a stabilizer at the input.
Flaws:
- The fuse melts.
- The battery must be purchased separately.
- The output power is only 200W.
However, for its price the device does an excellent job. Although sometimes there are delays, and the boiler switches to the UPS after more than 1 second.
Powercom wow 500u
Another compact device without batteries and with a minimum of functions. The diodes glow weakly, the battery has a non-standard size. And the output power is only 250 W.
However, the device is equipped with a USB port, three Euro sockets, indicators, and hot-swappable batteries. It can even be mounted on the wall.
SibContact IBPS 12 300N
The Russian UPS, suitable for most gas boilers, switches in 0.8 seconds. This is a device with an external battery up to 200Ah, which is not included in the kit, and equipped with an accident protection system.
The UPS is reliable. During assembly, the manufacturer used parts from global companies that have proven their professionalism.
The IBPS 12 300N has only three disadvantages:
- Expensive.
- The battery must be purchased separately.
- No LCD screen or beeps.
APC by Schneider Electric Back UPS BE700G-RS
The output power of 405W makes this UPS stand out among other backup UPSs. It is equipped with several connectors, stepwise sine wave approximation, and an auto-fuse.
Users complain that the device makes noise during operation and does not monitor power consumption.
Pure sine and its effect on the boiler
First of all, when choosing a UPS for a boiler, pay attention to the shape of the output voltage.
There are 2 types of output voltage:
- pure sine
- quasi-sine (square wave)
When choosing, always focus on a model with pure sine. Why is it important?
Boilers and its equipment do not like both voltage drops and changes in the frequency of the output signal. If you buy a UPS with a quasi-sine wave, the boiler may detect this voltage as an error and will go into trouble.
Electronics, of course, are not afraid of an irregular sine wave. But the pumps of heating equipment, such as RS or UPS, begin to hum.
The motor in the pumps is asynchronous and this pseudo-sine produces a lot of harmonics, which significantly reduce efficiency and cause heating and humming.
In addition, the boiler itself has its own built-in circulation pump, and sometimes more than one, hence such stringent requirements.
Always pay attention to the UPS's ability to withstand high inrush currents (two to three times). In addition to the boiler itself, there is also other equipment that needs to be powered, for example a submersible pump.
How to professionally choose a UPS for a boiler
The characteristics of an uninterruptible power supply are assessed according to three parameters:
- uninterruptible power supply;
- maximum current supplied by the source;
- operating time of the gas boiler in battery mode.
The first parameter is indicated in the UPS passport and in the product labeling, for example, ABC 500 or ABC 5000. Sometimes, to simplify things, the manufacturer simply writes the battery characteristics in Ah. The battery’s own voltage can be 12V or 24V, but this indicator does not affect the energy intensity of the unit and the operating time of the boiler.
An uninterruptible power supply differs from a conventional battery in that the inverter has limitations on the amount of current supplied. For low-power models, the current is limited to 5A. But for those used in gas boilers, at least 10A is recommended. If there is an additional circulation pump on the heating circuit, then the maximum current should be in the range of 10-15A.
Next, according to the passport for the gas boiler or the markings on the body of the circulation pump, the maximum current consumption is determined. It is necessary to sum up the values of all consumers connected to the uninterruptible power supply. This gives the maximum current consumed by the heating equipment during boiler operation. The total current must be less than the value given in the passport for the uninterruptible power supply.
For a gas boiler, an uninterruptible power supply with a maximum output current of at least twice as much as is obtained by summing the current load of the nodes is considered optimal.
At the moment the gas boiler starts, a current jump occurs on the electric motors of the pump and fan, so the energy of the uninterruptible power supply must be sufficient to start and spin the motor rotor to operating mode.
All that remains is to select the operating time - this can be done using the table.
For the heating system of an apartment, the operating period of the gas boiler from the battery is planned to be within 30 minutes, no more. If the voltage in the network disappears due to a thunderstorm or a minor incident, the automation at the transformer substation will turn on the lights in 15-30 minutes. If the accident is serious, then electricity can be connected after 15-20 hours. For country houses, the capacity of the uninterruptible power supply must be at least 100 Ah.
The best UPS + battery kit
The choice of uninterruptible power supply model depends on the characteristics and design features of the gas boiler. For wall-mounted models, the optimal solution is a unitary UPS model of a linear-interactive circuit with additional stabilization and purification of the sinusoidal shape. For stable operation of a boiler installed in a house or apartment up to 100 m2, a battery of 350-400VA is sufficient.
An example of such a kit would be the LogicPower LPY-B-PSW-500VA model. Its price is in the range of 120-140 dollars, the service life of the gel battery is at least 10 years. Installation on the wall-mounted boiler “STIHL” model SW250 or models of the brands “VOLTER”, “RUSELF”, “SVEN”, “Energy” is allowed.
If the operating conditions of a gas boiler require an uninterruptible power supply with an external battery, then you can use the SVEN RT500 UPS with a Vostok SK12-100 Ah battery or the Energy PN-500 model with a Vostok SK 12140 Ah battery. In the first case, the unit is able to supply 100 W to the boiler for 9 hours, in the second - almost 14 hours.
For imported gas boilers, uninterruptible power supplies of the “On-Line” type with a built-in battery with a power of up to 500 W are used. For example, “MX1 Gals - S” or “Bastion 1200”.
If you need to protect gas equipment for residential premises of 200-300 m2, then you will need a UPS with batteries with a voltage of 24V and an output of 250 W. For example, "Lanches L900Pro-H1kVA". In standby mode, the boiler will operate on the battery for almost a day. With an additional load of up to 300 W, the operating time of the heating system will be 3-5 hours.
Professional advice when choosing a UPS for boilers
The more complex and expensive the heating equipment, the stricter the requirements for uninterruptible power supply. For example, if the apartment has a gas boiler with a condensing chamber and microprocessor control, then UPSs with high-precision double sine wave conversion are suitable for protection. These are “On-line” models, best of all the brands Salt, Lanches, East. Any other devices with a switching time greater than zero become the cause of interference and current surges. Therefore, the risk of electronic failure increases.
For self-flowing gas boilers without a circulation pump, an inexpensive UPS of a linear-interactive design can be used.
If an uninterruptible power supply is planned not only to protect the heating system, but also as a backup power source for a video surveillance or security system, then the optimal solution would be a unit with an external battery. You can always replace the battery with a more powerful one or increase their number.
Is it possible to install an On-line UPS to power the boiler?
Imported gas heating boilers often have problems with the correct operation of the combustion front sensor. Incorrect connection of phase and zero to the input leads to blocking of the automation. Therefore, for Italian and German manufacturers, choosing a UPS with a through neutral is not recommended.
For stable operation of gas heating equipment, a linear-interactive uninterruptible power supply with frequency stabilization and smoothing of the signal sine wave will be sufficient.
Why it is unacceptable to use a computer UPS for emergency power supply to boilers
To protect computers, monitors and network equipment, primitive offline UPSs are used, consisting of a battery, charger and inverter. A computer power supply is a complex electronic device. Receiving electricity as input, the electronics rectify the current and convert it to the required voltages.
Therefore, a UPS for a computer does not meet stringent requirements for harmonics, sine waves and other indicators important for the normal operation of electric motors and electric valves of gas heating boilers. All that is required is voltage and frequency.
Calculation of power and battery life
What power should I choose for a UPS for a boiler room? The calculation here is not complicated.
Just add up the power of all electrical appliances that will be connected through it and multiply by two. If there is a deep-well pump, then by three - taking into account its starting currents.
The data can be taken from the passport or operating instructions, or viewed directly on the product bodies.
For example, for a boiler room where 3 pumps of 90 W each are installed and the boiler itself is 135 W, an inverter from 0.8 to 1.0 kW is suitable. At lower power, field switches (transistors) will overheat.
If the sum of all electrical appliances exceeds the power of the model you have chosen, suddenly you want to power any household appliances, light bulbs, then initially take them into account, and not just boiler equipment.
Here the power can vary from 1 to 5 kW.
How long will the selected UPS operate in autonomous mode? It all depends on the batteries. Here is a table with characteristics of battery capacity and connected load:
It clearly shows in hours and minutes how long your uninterruptible power supply will last for independent operation from the network.
How to choose
There is no clear answer to the question of how to choose a UPS for a gas boiler, for the simple reason that it depends on several parameters:
- how long the system should work offline;
- values of active and apparent power;
- the nature of the sinusoid at the output;
- wide range of operating voltages;
- the need to connect additional containers.

Ask a Question
The UPS must be selected so that the active power indicator is 2-3 times higher than the total power of the heating boiler and circulation pump. Then the uninterruptible power supply will withstand inrush currents at the moment the pump starts without negative consequences. The operating voltage range influences the choice of country house owners, since on lines distant from the transformer substation, its value sometimes drops to 160 V. That is, to answer the question of how to choose, you must first determine in which mode you will use the system.
In networks with reduced voltage, it is recommended to use UPS types: online and line-interactive.
Installation location
It is better to place the UPS near existing outlets. If it is not large, then it is not at all necessary to hang it on the wall, just place it on the nearest shelf. The main thing is not to block the ventilation holes.
At the same time, do not forget to comply with the rules of the PUE. The minimum distances from gas pipes to sockets, including the UPS, must be at least 0.5 m.
Regarding the placement of batteries. Fashionable AGM models are afraid of elevated temperatures of more than 30 degrees. And near the boiler the temperature will clearly not be room temperature.
Therefore, place the battery as far as possible from heating pipes and hot boiler equipment.
Battery types
Lead-acid batteries are used for backup power. They weigh more, but are not as expensive as lithium ones. Moreover, the service life of such batteries can reach 12 years. In turn, lithium-ion batteries have a higher specific capacity and a slow charging speed. They can only be stored in a charged state in a room where there are no temperature changes.
Batteries are distinguished by the electrolyte that is used:
- A.G.M. Batteries of this type are sealed and characterized by low electrical resistance. They work longer than gel ones, are more reliable, are resistant to vibrations, can be installed in any position and are cheap.
- GEL. The gel electrolyte is non-toxic and does not require specialized maintenance. Batteries with GEL electrolyte are powerful, reliable and capacious.
Car batteries or AGM, gel
Many consumers often use car batteries for uninterruptible power supply, which is absolutely not allowed. These batteries are fire and explosive.
They are designed for starting currents, and accordingly do not provide the autonomous operation that is required of them. Therefore, here you need to use specialized batteries using AGM or GEL-gel technology.
AGMs have a service life of 6 to 10 years, and gel ones from 10 to 15 years.
Also, gel ones are not afraid of deep discharge.
In addition, both models are fire and explosion-proof for any premises and do not emit any gases. Of course, they cost more, but if earlier the prices differed significantly, today you can find models with a difference of only a couple of thousand.
Automotive types are not designed for a large number of charge-discharge cycles, but specialized ones with a regular discharge of 30% can be painlessly recharged up to 700 times!
That is, a regular one from a car will last you for a maximum of six months or one heating season, and AGM or gel ones should, in theory, last at least 10 years.
Moreover, high-quality UPSs initially have built-in deep discharge protection. Accordingly, this will further increase the battery life and ensure the longevity of the entire system.
Just be careful and check the battery release date in advance, even in the store. It may not be clearly indicated by numbers, and the sellers, modestly keeping silent about this point, will sell you an old, stale model.
Here, for example, is a table decoding the release date of Ventura brand batteries. Code GF11 PJB6VVK3EA and its decoding based on the first characters. Other brands may vary.
It turns out the release date: 2017-June-11.

Types of UPS
Always strive to buy those inverters that initially have a voltage stabilizer built into them.
According to this parameter, UPS can be divided into 3 types:
- off line - whatever voltage is supplied to them, this is what comes out
An alternating voltage of 200V was supplied, and the same alternating voltage of 200V was received at the output. If the network parameters deviate beyond the minimum or maximum ranges, it will simply turn on the inverter and begin to take energy from the battery.
Some people wonder why their batteries drain so quickly. Although there seemed to be no outages. Just check the input voltage and everything will become clear.
- on-line - in them the alternating voltage is first converted into direct voltage, corrected, and then alternating voltage is output again
That is, all bad network parameters (sinusoid, voltage drops, frequency) are leveled and smoothed to nominal values.
- linear-interactive - they do not convert the frequency, but only have a built-in stabilizer
The best and most advanced models today are online.
They must be installed if you have temporary or long-term power supply from a generator.
There, problems are often observed with frequencies other than 50Hz.

Do you need a stabilizer if you have a UPS?
The power supply to country houses is characterized not only by frequent interruptions, but also by low quality input voltage. However, the UPS should not be considered a panacea for these ills.
Not all models can “pull” too low a voltage (less than 170-180V).
With such a drawdown, the device will go into error, turn off and beep. Accordingly, the boiler will turn off along with it, or it will immediately switch to the battery.
At the same time, the UPS itself may indicate that it is designed to operate at a voltage of 180V. What's the matter, were they deceived in the store?
The fact is that for the initial start-up such instances require a minimum of 190V, and only then, in the event of further drawdown, they can draw both 180V and 170V, and maybe lower.
Therefore, if you really have serious and constant problems with input U<200V, you will still have to install a normal inverter stabilizer at the input.
Otherwise, the boiler will be constantly powered only by batteries. And this will not increase their service life.
The inverter stabilizer calmly levels the parameters to normal, starting with drawdowns up to 90V.

FAQ:
By tradition, I collect the most frequent questions from friends, clients, and ordinary people from forums.
How to calculate the UPS power for a boiler?
When calculating, it is necessary to start from the nameplate electrical power of the gas boiler, circulation and make-up pumps. The total value must be doubled: during equipment startup, short-term current surges are possible.
How to calculate how much battery capacity will last during a power outage?
Battery capacity is expressed in ampere hours. This parameter means the load at which the battery life will be used up in 60 minutes. The discharge current is determined by the formula:
I=W/V/K,
where I is the desired current value,
W – total boiler power,
V is the rated voltage of the battery,
K – inverter efficiency.
Theoretically, the operating time of equipment without connecting to the network can be calculated by simply dividing the capacitance value by the discharge current. To be more consistent with real conditions, I recommend performing the division operation again, adding to the calculation the loss factor, which on average is 1.42.
Example. The total power W of the boiler equipment is 250 watts. How long will it work after a power outage? Two 24 volt batteries with a capacity of E = 32 A/h each are connected to the UPS.
Let's find the discharge current: I = W/V/ K = 250/24/0.8 = 13.2 A. Here we do not know the efficiency of the uninterruptible power supply, so we used its average value of 80%.
When several batteries are connected in parallel, their capacity is summed up. In our example, the operating time of the boiler without electricity will be equal to: T = E/I/1.42= (32+32)/13.2/1.42 = 3.4 hours.
What battery life of an uninterruptible power supply is considered sufficient?
There is no clear answer here. It all depends on personal preferences and power supply conditions. Only this factor should be taken into account: the resource reserve of the UPS and the batteries connected to it allows them to be operated in a more gentle mode, increasing uptime. I think it's better to start at 12 hours. It's better to pay a little extra by purchasing an additional battery pack.
UPS from Russian manufacturers
When choosing an emergency power supply for a private home or cottage, you should give preference to devices from well-known companies whose brand has a large number of positive reviews. Among such manufacturers, we can highlight Russian products that have been trusted by buyers for more than 1 year.
As an example, let's take a simple UPS model “Energy PN-1000” with a 75A/h battery. This device is protected from overloads, short circuits, overheating and complete battery discharge. Thanks to the presence of a built-in relay stabilizer, the uninterruptible power supply produces a pure sine wave at the output, which has a beneficial effect on the service life of heating equipment, especially with unstable voltage. The input voltage range of this UPS is within 155-275V, the switching time to battery mode is 8ms. You can find detailed specifications on the official representative website.
