Touch sensor

Equipping with a motion/light sensor expands the functionality of floodlight equipment. The motion sensor is triggered when a person crosses the border of its coverage area (10-15 meters) in a viewing sector of 120-160 degrees. Infrared, ultrasonic, radio wave sensors are used.

Light sensors respond to changes in the intensity of the luminous flux, recorded by a photocell and analyzed by a detector. The spotlight automatically turns on and off when the light level meets a preset threshold.

Lighting type

LED spotlights shine at a certain solid angle, which determines the range and sector of the illuminated area. Available models:

Criterias of choice

Power

One of the most important parameters of a spotlight is the luminous flux power. The buyer needs to decide in advance on the illuminated area. As a standard, there is a value of illumination measured in lux (lx). The measurement is carried out using a special device called a lux meter. The standards are established by the regulatory document “Natural and artificial lighting” - SNiP 05/23/2010. The selection of a street spotlight is made based on the information provided in the table below.

A comfortable level of illumination is considered to be 10 lux. The light from the Moon provides only 0.27 lux, and the Sun provides illumination at the level of 100 thousand lux. Different tasks require different amounts of light. For example, to work as a jeweler you will need illumination of 300 lux.

When determining the illumination indicator, you need to keep in mind that over time, the brightness of the diodes decreases, which directly affects the quality of the luminous flux. In this regard, it is recommended to take care of the safety margin of the lamp in advance. It is believed that one and a half or even two times the power reserve is required.

The more powerful the spotlight, the larger the area it can illuminate and the fewer pieces of lighting equipment will be needed. To select a spotlight, calculations are carried out.

Input parameters:

  • The brightness of the diodes for each watt of power is 100 lm.

Note! Brightness is measured in lumens, and this indicator is directly proportional to the illumination. Lux is equal to lumen divided by unit area: lux=lumen/square meter.

Thus, the spotlight produces 10 thousand lm (100 W × 100 lm). Next, we use the above form and calculate the comfortable brightness that the spotlight can provide. To do this, divide 10 thousand lm by 10 lux and get 1000 sq. m. In this case, it is necessary to decide at what distance from the ground to hang a 100 W lamp so that the illumination level of the area is 10 lux. To solve the problem, you will need the following formula: R=5.65√W/L, where W is power (100 W), L is illumination (10 lux). Having carried out the calculations, we obtain the installation height of the spotlight - 25.2 m. If you need to place the spotlight lower, then the power required is not so high.

It should also be taken into account that the formula contains a luminous flux distribution coefficient (5.65). Moreover, this indicator corresponds to lamps with a light beam opening angle of 120 degrees. Manufacturers also produce equipment with a directional flow of light generated by an installed lens.

In such devices, the light beam opens at an angle of 60 degrees. Then another coefficient is used - 10.67. Thus, the recommended installation height of the equipment will almost double. In this regard, spotlights with a beam opening at an angle of 60 degrees are not practical for lighting small objects, such as a country house.

Another component of the lighting device is the power supply. Today, manufacturers offer a choice of floodlight models with voltages of 12, 24, 36 and 22 V. In the latter case, the operation of the equipment is independent of intermediate units.

Degree of protection

The level of protection of the device from external factors is determined by an alphanumeric code, where the letters (IP) indicate “ingress protection”, and the two numbers following the letters indicate its degree. The higher the number, the more reliable the protection. There are devices with different levels of it:

  1. Models with code IP44 can only be used indoors. They are not intended for the street.
  2. Lamps with code IP65 and higher are used for street lighting.
  3. IP67 is even more resistant. Such equipment can be used not only in a suspended position, but also on the ground.

Matrix color temperature

The higher the color temperature of the LED, the higher the light output. At a temperature of 6500K and a power of 40 W, the luminous flux will be about 4000 lumens, at a temperature of 5000K - about 3600 lumens, at 3500K - 3000 lumens. Therefore, cold light is more effective for illuminating areas, although it has a blue tint. But for illuminating the work surface and reading, they are worse than the 5000K option, which produces pure white light.

Matrix lamp design

The diode matrix is ​​the substrate on which the LED crystals are located. If one of the crystals breaks, the entire matrix loses functionality. The cost of an LED matrix is ​​high, and therefore conventional lamps are more profitable than matrix lamps. The fact is that in LED lamps it is possible to replace individual diodes, which significantly reduces operating costs.

Due to their design features, light diodes and matrices emit light at a very narrow angle (about 120 degrees). As a result, classification of equipment is difficult. If a lighting device has LEDs or matrices in the same plane, the device is classified as a floodlight.

The power of the LED matrix is ​​most often no higher than 50 W. If there is a need for more power, several matrices are placed in the lamp. The driver in powerful models is located in the inside of the case. As a result, when replacing the driver, it is necessary to dismantle the lamp from its location.

The body of the spotlight is made of aluminum alloy. To gain access to the matrix, unscrew four screws. After this, remove the protective panel with optical glass and reflector. Due to the absence of a gap between the case and the substrate, as well as the presence of thermally conductive paste, it is possible to effectively remove thermal energy from the crystals. Good heat dissipation increases the service life of the floodlight.

There is a network cable on the back side. To ensure tightness, it is crimped with a special nut. Next, the wire enters the panel (clamped with screws) through the silicone layer - towards the lamp body. To allow the spotlight to be placed on a pole, a swivel bracket is provided. The case has vertical fins used to remove heat from the matrix.

The driver is located under the back cover of the device. It transforms a voltage of 220 V into a voltage with a stabilized current suitable for the operation of the matrix.

An example of a street lamp is the DiUS model. The power of individual LEDs is 1 W. The kit includes a driver, which is a sealed dedicated unit connected to the lamp via a connector. The driver is attached to the case using screws. If necessary, it can be easily removed from the printed circuit board.

Halogen or LED spotlight?

Which spotlight is better, LED or halogen, is a very pressing question today. Halogen lights are often considered as an alternative to LEDs. 25-30% lower cost, cheap lamps are the main motivating factors. But in the end, halogen spotlights are significantly inferior to LED ones. Their energy consumption is five times higher, and the service life of the light-emitting element is ten to twenty times less.

Within a year of regular operation, the cost of a halogen lamp will be several times higher than the operating costs of an LED lamp, making its purchase unprofitable.

How to choose a budget LED floodlight

There are products from several hundred manufacturers on the market. The price of their products may differ significantly from products from brands Philips, Osram, Hyunday. Of course, such giants make the best LED spotlights, but the brands Feron, Luna, and Jazzway have proven themselves well.

For example, to provide street lighting with 500 W incandescent lamps, you will need to install a large-sized lamp - from 60x60 cm. In turn, a 50 W LED street floodlight has dimensions of 20x20 cm.

Frequent voltage fluctuations adversely affect the service life of the LED lamp

LED lamps for street lighting have different configurations. They can be made in the shape of a square, rectangle, circle, oval or ruler. These lamps are characterized by additional technical parameters:

  1. Wide power supply range – from 100 to 240 Volts. If the voltage drops, the LED spotlight continues to operate as usual.
  2. Works with both alternating and direct current.
  3. A certain number of diodes.
  4. Different colors of light - hot or cold, different temperatures.
  5. Possibility of changing the light scattering angle. Most often, the installation angle of floodlights for outdoor lighting is 50° or more.

It should be noted that frequent voltage surges adversely affect the service life of the lamp, reducing it. In this case, the starting unit of the searchlight very quickly fails.
