Having visited a car audio store, you can be stunned by the availability of different types of subwoofers. This article will answer the question of how to choose a subwoofer for a car, what characteristics you should pay attention to and which ones are better to ignore, we will consider the types of boxes and their sound in different car bodies.
There are 3 options for subwoofers:
- Active;
- Passive;
- An option is when a separate speaker is purchased, a box is made for it, an amplifier and wires are purchased. Since this option involves a more complex and expensive process, there is a separate article for it, a link to it, and we have placed our opinion at the end of the article. But first, we advise you to read this article, in it we looked at the basic indicators that will be useful to you when choosing a subwoofer speaker; in the next article we will not return to them, but will delve into more complex characteristics.
The article is perfect for novice car audio enthusiasts who want to add bass to their car for little money.
Types of subwoofers, active and passive
As already mentioned, we will consider 2 options: one is simpler, the other is a little more complicated, but more interesting.
1st option ─ active subwoofer. Everything is already included with it, a box to which the amplifier is screwed and all the necessary wires for connection. After purchasing, all that remains is to go to a garage or service center to install it.
2nd option ─ passive subwoofer. This is where things get a little more complicated. You only get the speaker and box. The manufacturer made the calculations, assembled the box and screwed the speaker to it. You select the amplifier and wires yourself.
For comparison, an active subwoofer is a more budget-friendly solution, and the result will be appropriate; you should not expect anything more from it.
Passive subwoofer ─ a step higher.
We will not dwell on this section for a long time; for more detailed information, read the article comparing active and passive subwoofers.
It is also worth noting that in modern realities we do not recommend passive subwoofers in a factory box. We advise you to overpay a little and purchase a subwoofer speaker and a separate box. The bundle will be a little more expensive, but the result will surprise you.
What characteristics should you pay attention to when choosing a subwoofer?
Often manufacturers try to show that their product is better than it actually is. They may write some unrealistic numbers on the box. But, looking at the instructions, we find that there are not many characteristics there, as a rule, because there is nothing special to brag about. However, even with this small list we can make the right choice.
Power
Now, when choosing a subwoofer, the main preference is given to power; it is believed that the more powerful the equipment, the better. In fact, this is not entirely true. Let's figure out what power you should pay attention to.
Peak (MAX) As a rule, the manufacturer likes to indicate it everywhere, and these are some unrealistic numbers. For example, 1000 or 2000 watts, and for little money. But, to put it mildly, this is a hoax. There is no such power there. Peak power is the power at which the speaker will play, but only for a short time. There will be horrific sound distortion. Unfortunately, in this mode, the subwoofer’s task is not to provide high-quality sound ─ but just to survive for a couple of seconds.
Rated (RMS) The next power we'll look at is rated power, which can be referred to as RMS in the instructions. This is the power at which sound distortion is minimal, and the speaker can play for a long time without causing harm to itself, this is what you should pay attention to. No matter how strange it may sound, but, for example, when comparing a powerful and weak subwoofer, the weak one can play louder than the powerful one. That is why power is not the main indicator. It shows how much power the speaker is using, not how loud it is playing.
If you are going to purchase a passive subwoofer, its volume and sound quality will directly depend on whether you have chosen the right amplifier for it. To avoid a situation where you bought a subwoofer and because of an unsuitable amplifier it does not play, we recommend that you read the article “How to choose an amplifier for a subwoofer.”
Sensitivity
Sensitivity is the ratio of the diffuser area and its stroke. In order for a speaker to play loudly, it needs a large cone and a large stroke. But often manufacturers make a huge dewlap, an impressive lip. People think that a speaker has a lot of excursion and plays louder, but in fact it loses to speakers with a larger cone. You should not give preference to subwoofers with a large lip; it loses to a small one, because a speaker with a large diffuser has a higher efficiency. Thus, a large stroke is nice, but the diffuser area is much more useful.
This indicator is measured as follows. They take a speaker, place a microphone at a distance of one meter and strictly apply 1 watt to the speaker. The microphone records these readings, for example, for a subwoofer it can be 88 Db. If power is consumption, then sensitivity is the output of the subwoofer itself. By increasing the power by 2 times, the sensitivity will increase by 3 decibels; a difference of 3 decibels is considered a 2-fold increase in volume.
Now you understand that power is a minor indicator. Let's take an example: the first subwoofer has a rated power of 300 watts and a sensitivity of 85 decibels. The second one also has 300 watts and a sensitivity of 90 decibels. 260 watts were supplied to the first speaker, and 260 watts to the second, but the second speaker, due to its greater efficiency, will play an order of magnitude louder.
Resistance (impedance)
Basically, all car cabinet subwoofers have a resistance of 4 ohms. But there are exceptions, for example, 1 or 2 Ohms. Resistance affects how much power the amplifier will deliver; the lower the resistance, the more power the amplifier will deliver. Everything seems to be fine, but in this case it begins to distort the sound more and heat up more.
We recommend choosing a resistance of 4 Ohms ─ this is the golden mean between quality and volume. If the active subwoofer has a small resistance of 1 or 2 ohms, then most likely the manufacturer is trying to squeeze the maximum out of the amplifier, without paying any attention to sound quality. This rule does not work in loud systems, or in SPL competitions. These subwoofers have two coils, thanks to which you can change the resistance and switch it to a lower one, which will allow you to get maximum volume.

The subwoofer's closed acoustic design prevents resonance, which can significantly reduce sound quality. The driver, made from tough injection molded polypropylene, also reduces interference.
Speaker size
The next thing we can pay attention to when we come to the store is the size of the subwoofer speaker; most speakers have a diameter of:
- 8 inches (20 cm)
- 10 inches (25 cm);
- 12 inches (30 cm);
- 15 inches (38 cm);
The most common diameter is 12 inches, so to speak, the golden mean. The advantages of a small speaker include its fast bass speed and small box volume, which will help save space in the trunk. But there are also disadvantages - it is difficult for him to play lower bass. It has lower sensitivity, therefore it is quieter. The table below shows how the characteristics change depending on the size.
Characteristics | 8 inch (20 cm) | 10 inch (25 cm) | 12 inch (30 cm) |
Power RMS | 80 W | 101 W | 121 W |
Sensitivity (1W/1m) | 87 db | 88 db | 90 db |
Here we can build on your musical preferences. Let's say you love different types of music. In this case, it is better to consider the 12th subwoofer. If you don't have much trunk space and only listen to club music, then the 10-inch size is worth a look. If you prefer, for example, rap or music with a lot of bass, and the trunk allows you, then it is better to opt for a 15-inch subwoofer ─ it will have the highest sensitivity.
Type of box (acoustic design)
The next thing we can visually determine how a subwoofer will play is to look at the type of box and determine what material it is made of. The most common boxes that you can find in the store:
- Closed box (CL);
- bass inverter (FI);
- Bandpass (BP)
- Let's consider the advantages of a closed box. It has the most compact size, fast and clear bass, and minimal sound delays. Of the minuses - the quietest design. Now let's discuss the installation of a subwoofer in various car bodies. If you are the owner of a station wagon or hatchback, you can install 10, 12, 15 inches without any difference. If you have a sedan, it is not recommended to install the 10-inch in a closed box, you will simply hear it. The efficiency of the box is very low, 10 plays quietly, and in total nothing interesting will happen.
- The next option, which is often found, is a bass reflex. This is a box that has a slot or hole. It plays 2 times louder than a closed box and has dimensions an order of magnitude larger. However, in reality the sound quality is no longer as clear, it is more buzzy. Nevertheless, this is the best option and is suitable for absolutely any car body. Thus, the bass reflex is loud, its delays are within normal limits, a kind of golden mean.
- Bandpass is a design in which the speaker is hidden in a box. Usually it is decorated with some beautiful plexiglass. It is the same size as a bass reflex, but has the greatest output. If you need to get the most out of the speaker, then it is better to purchase a bandpass. However, it also has its disadvantages, namely ─ the slowest design. It is difficult for this speaker to play fast club music, it will lag.
For those who want to delve deeper into the comparison of boxes, namely displacement, port area, and other indicators, read this article on how the box affects sound.
Design features of devices
To understand what parameters to use to choose a subwoofer for your car, you need to thoroughly understand how it works. By design, subwoofers are divided into four types:
- Closed, with a sealed housing. The subwoofer is mounted in a box of a given volume. It dampens the closed sound wave behind the speaker. However, devices with a closed design are not the best subwoofers for cars. They are rarely used due to low efficiency. A closed subwoofer box extinguishes a closed sound wave
- Bass reflex. These are closed boxes with a tunnel (bass reflex) of a certain size. Thanks to the tunnel, increased pressure is created on the speaker used, which allows you to raise the sound level at a given frequency in the range from 50 to 120 Hz. The enclosed space increases the pressure exerted on the cone, which reduces the likelihood of sound distortion. The occurrence of mechanical damage to the speaker is also excluded. In this case, the phase inverter corrects the rise in the frequency response (amplitude-frequency characteristic) and relieves the diffuser from excess pressure. All this leads to a significant increase in the efficiency of the subwoofer. Bass reflex box reduces sound distortion
- Stripes. These are subwoofers with speakers tucked inside. The most complex type of device, it requires additional space. This is explained by the need to combine the features inherent in the closed-type design and the bass reflex. The basis for the product is a box with a bass reflex tunnel. A speaker is installed inside, which also acts as a partition. Thanks to this design, there is a closed, sealed space behind the speaker, which adds rigidity to the cone. A volumetric compartment is formed in front of the speaker, which has an output due to the presence of a bass reflex.
Subwoofer bandpass requires additional space - Subwoofers with a passive radiator, having a second passive speaker designed to reduce the resonant frequency. The installation of such systems is practiced in E-class cars (for example, Mercedes-Benz E-class).
Passive subwoofer driver reduces resonant frequency
The main advantages of using closed subwoofers in cars:
- simple calculations of the volume of the structure;
- low probability of speaker overload;
- high level of low frequency reproduction.

Listening to a subwoofer
The next thing you can do when choosing a subwoofer is listen to it. This section can hardly be called objective, because... The sound in the room and in the car will be different. In this regard, not all sellers want to connect subwoofers and demonstrate how they play. The main goal in this section is the following, you have selected a couple of options based on characteristics. If you connect them and compare them, in any case, the sound and volume will be different, and you will make a choice that you like.
Recommendations for listening:
- You shouldn't ask a consultant to connect every subwoofer. Choose 2 options for comparison based on the recommendations we gave above;
- Try to compare in different genres, where there is a higher bass and a lower one, fast and slow. The ideal option for comparison would be the music tracks that you listen to most often.
- Choose one point to listen to; indoor sound in different parts of the room can be very different.
- Remember that the subwoofer tends to play out. Over time, its volume will increase and the bass will become clearer and faster.
- Can't hear the difference? Choose a cheaper option
