What types of thermometers are there?

You have many different options to choose from.

Digital (electronic) thermometer

  • Digital and other thermometers

A digital thermometer has an electronic sensor at one end and a display display at the other. Digital thermometers can be used in several ways: orally (through the mouth), rectally (through the anus), and under the armpit.

These aren't the best choice for children because they weren't designed for babies, you can't take your baby's temperature rectally, and axillary temperature is one of the least accurate ways to take it.

If you choose the digital option, be sure to buy a children's digital thermometer.

What is rectal temperature measurement?

This is when a thermometer measures the temperature while inserted into the anus; there are special models or you can use regular electronic thermometers. You turn the baby onto his stomach and carefully insert the thermometer. A rectal thermometer is the most accurate thermometer for a baby. In the anal cavity, the temperature is always stable and is closest to the temperature of the child’s internal organs. Measuring this way will give you the most accurate estimate.

Rectal thermometers are all similar to each other. They consist of a probe, a button and a digital screen in the handle (with or without backlight). Temperature readings are displayed on the screen. They are cheap but accurate, but they fail quite often.

The method is contraindicated for diseases of the rectum, diarrhea, constipation.

To be honest, we're not fans of rectal thermometers. This is not very pleasant for the baby. If you decide to choose it, choose a model with a wide base and a flexible tip. This will prevent you from inserting the thermometer too far. Inserting the rectal thermometer too deeply may cause injury. And no need to remind you that you should wash your rectal thermometer after each use.

Normal temperature when measured rectally is considered to be 36.6°C – 37.7°C.

What is oral measurement?

This method is considered one of the most reliable. But before measuring, do not eat cold/hot and also keep your mouth closed. This is difficult for small children. The method is not suitable for children with oral diseases and nasal breathing disorders.

To take your temperature orally, place the tip of the thermometer under your tongue, to the left or right of the frenulum, for three minutes or until the beep occurs. Normal temperature when measured in the oral cavity is 36.3 °C – 37.3 °C.

Measurement under the arms (axillary method).

Measuring under the arms is one of the least accurate ways to measure temperature because the temperature reading is external and difficult to measure if the baby is moving. If this is how you measure temperature, then at least wipe your armpits of sweat, because this also affects accuracy.

Typically, body temperature measured under the armpit is 0.5 degrees Celsius lower than when measured orally.

Glass thermometer

A typical thermometer from childhood. Place it under your armpit or under your tongue and the mercury rises until it shows the result. Used in the same way as digital.

Mercury is no longer used

(if you still have it in your home, dispose of it properly), but today similar designs are produced with a substitute, without mercury.

Ear thermometer

They are often used in hospitals. They are fast, safe and, most importantly, comfortable for the baby. However, without training, you may find it quite difficult to position the thermometer correctly, and incorrect positioning will give an inaccurate result.

Not suitable for children under 3-6 months, and it is better to use only from a year, because the ear canal is still developing, often too narrow.

They quickly measure the baby's temperature using infrared reading. However, to get the exact result:

  • the ear must be clean
  • it needs to be placed correctly
  • it must be the appropriate size for the child's ear canal
  • the child must be over three months old to ensure accuracy
  • not all children like this option

However, the disadvantages go away if it is an infrared option.

Normal temperature when measured in the auricle is 35.8°C – 37.8°C.

Temporal artery thermometer

This type of thermometer measures infrared heat from the temporal artery on the forehead. Measurements are accurate even for newborns.

Pacifier thermometer (pacifier)

This is a pacifier with a digital thermometer. However, doctors often say that these data cannot be relied upon; they do not measure very accurately. It's better to choose a different type of thermometer.

Forehead strip thermometer

This is a pocket-sized electronic device with disposable plastic strips that you place on your child's forehead and read the temperature. They are also inaccurate and should not be chosen.

Infrared thermometer

If you've been looking for an incredibly high-tech baby thermometer, this is it. With the touch of a button, you can measure your baby's temperature without even touching him. The disadvantage is the high price.

Read more in a separate article. A very convenient option: without contact (you don’t have to wake up the child), the result is in just a second, you just need to point the device at the forehead from a distance of 3-4 cm. The results are accurate when used correctly.

Even more interesting? Some models provide data transfer to a smartphone to record, store and monitor the baby's temperature through a free application (for example, eMyBaby).

  • memory for 25 positions;

  • error 0.01°С
  • when used very often, it underestimates the data.

A wonderful thing that allows you to measure the temperature not only of a child, but of the whole family, thanks to the set of attachments included. The second measurement time is very convenient for those who have an overly active child. It’s convenient to use, there are only two buttons. We are very pleased with the purchase, the device does its job perfectly.

CS Medica KIDS CS-88

A fairly accurate non-contact device, it has a convenient elongated body with a power button and an illuminated screen located on it. The device has no age restrictions; in addition, it can determine the temperature of water or baby food. The kit includes the device itself, batteries and a case. There is a switch between °C and °F.

thermometer CS Medica KIDS CS-88

  • error (0.1°C);
  • measures quickly (1 second);
  • memory for 24 cells;
  • the ability to measure the temperature of objects (bathing water, bottles with mixtures).
  • loud signal, sometimes the child wakes up.

We tried several thermometers, everything was wrong, one took a long time to measure, the other was inaccurate. The turn came to the CS Medica KIDS CS-88, and all the problems ended there. Very convenient, simple and fast, the temperature of bottles with mixtures is also easy to measure. I recommend it to everyone, buy it and don’t worry!

Canpol Babies Digital

A modern electronic thermometer for a child is equipped with a small display, but thanks to the large numbers it is easy to read. The body, made of plastic with a bendable tip, will not cause any inconvenience to the child. Allows you to measure temperature in three ways: oral, axillary and rectal. Emits a beep when the procedure is completed.

Canpol Babies Digital Thermometer

  • error 0.1°C;
  • waterproof case;
  • curved tip.
  • no screen backlight;
  • According to the instructions, it accurately measures in 1 minute only with the rectal or oral methods.

The thermometer is good, I liked it for its simplicity and brevity. It was well thought out that the tip bends, it is very convenient when a child tosses and turns in his sleep, the thermometer does not fly out of the armpit, however, after the signal you have to leave it for another 4 minutes, sometimes it turns off, but it remembers the readings, so it’s okay. Very good for the price, I'm not going to change it.

Turbo Smart

The bracelet thermometer is capable of monitoring a child’s temperature 24 hours a day; it synchronizes via Bluetooth 4.0 wireless network with a free application (the name is indicated in the instructions) on your smartphone. The application sets a temperature parameter, upon reaching which the application will sound a sound signal. The device is recommended for children under 3 years of age with a shoulder circumference of up to 18 cm.

Procedure timeabout 15 sec
Deviations01 – 0.3°С

Turbo Smart thermometer

  • easy to use;
  • synchronizes with a smartphone;
  • The application creates a graph of temperature changes.
  • error (0.1 – 0.3°С);
  • For accurate readings, correct fixation in the axillary region is required.

Great device! There is no need to run or sit and wait for the measurement to take place, all the results are at your fingertips on your phone. The bracelet strap does not rub the skin at all, the child does not notice it at all, the readings are accurate (I checked it with mercury several times), the main thing is to fasten the bracelet correctly so that the sensor is closer to the armpit. I am very pleased that I bought this particular thermometer!

Little Doctor LD-303

The electronic digital nipple thermometer is intended only for measuring the temperature of infants; after measurement, it gives a sound signal. Control of the device is very simple, using a single button near the display. The silicone material of the device is waterproof and absolutely safe for children.

thermometer Little Doctor LD-303

  • small error (0.1°C);
  • waterproof housing;
  • small size (62x45x39 mm).
  • some children may spit it out.

The device is very helpful if your child is irritated by ordinary thermometers. At first, my daughter spat out this pacifier, but then she got used to it and used it until she was almost one and a half years old. It doesn’t measure very quickly, but it does it accurately, and the child doesn’t care, for him it’s just a pacifier. I recommend it to expectant and young mothers, the price is low and the thermometer is excellent.

Ramili Baby ET3030

Medical infrared thermometer with a functional display that displays all the necessary information. Temperature is measured in two ways - by immersing in the ear or non-contactly in the forehead area. The case fits comfortably and securely in your hand, and the backlit display eliminates the need to go out into the light to view readings. A signal is provided upon completion of the procedure.

  • small error (0.1°C);
  • measurement speed 1 second.
  • the error may increase to 0.5°C.

It's a good device, a little expensive, but overall I'm satisfied. We also use it at home as a clock and a room thermometer. To reduce the incidence of errors in readings, I advise you to wipe the nozzle with alcohol before use. The sound signal is made conveniently; if the temperature is normal, it beeps once, if it is too high, then it beeps twice.

Xiaomi Miaomiaoce Smart

The unique thermometer is a silicone puck 17 mm in diameter, which is attached to the child’s chest using an adhesive pad. The sensor transmits all collected data to your smartphone, and when the temperature rises, the phone emits a signal. Completely hypoallergenic and will not harm the child.

The device continuously measures temperature, which is simply a great option, especially after vaccinations or during a child’s illness. Doesn't bother the baby at all. Everything is always under control; if the temperature rises, the application signals, so don’t miss the moment. I am delighted and recommend everyone to buy this thermometer!
