Inexpensive graphics tablets for drawing
Despite Wacom's achievements, there are other manufacturers of good graphics tablets.
The most inexpensive graphics tablet with good reviews is the Huion H420. The cost of the device is about 3 thousand rubles. The tablet has a small working area of 102x57 mm, a stylus sensitivity of 2,048 pressure levels and the presence of three customizable buttons. The device is compatible with all graphics programs; one of the drawbacks is that you can scratch the screen with a stylus, so you should work carefully.
Huion H420 Tablet
Another budget option is the Genius EasyPen i405X, which costs less than 3 thousand rubles. The tablet's stylus is slightly worse than the previous model - 1,024 pressure levels, but the resolution is not bad - 250 lpi.
Among the shortcomings, we note the need to constantly change the batteries in the stylus, difficulties with the driver’s operation, and an ill-conceived design (just don’t attach the stylus to the clip).
Genius EasyPen i405X tablet
XP-Pen Star 06 will cost about 10 thousand rubles. You shouldn’t believe the 8,192 pressure levels stated on the manufacturer’s website—in practice, the pen seems much less sensitive. In general, the tablet has good characteristics, a battery-free stylus and well-designed buttons with a control wheel.

Huion Giano WH1409, costing about 24 thousand rubles, is highly praised for its increased working area, not very high price compared to similar models, the presence of built-in memory and a powerful battery that can last about 40 hours. The disadvantages are the thickness of the device and the insufficiently convenient stylus.
Huion Giano WH1409 tabletCriteria for choosing a graphics tablet
First of all, do not confuse this device with a regular tablet with stylus support.
Keep in mind! There are two types of graphics tablets themselves:
- devices with a touch surface used for drawing on a computer or laptop;
- models with a screen (graphic displays) on which the image is directly displayed.
Before purchasing and choosing a graphics tablet, you should understand its technical characteristics.
The most important of them are:
- Working surface. Popular options are A3-A6. Devices with a small working surface are more compact and mobile. Devices with a large working surface allow you to create images with fine details.
- Pen type. There are two stylus options - wired and wireless. The second is more convenient, but the user may experience a microdelay, which can lead to discomfort and inaccurate operation.
- Pen resolution and precision. The number of lines per inch (lpi) varies within different limits - the higher the resolution, the more detailed the drawing can be. The latter is also related to the accuracy of the pen, as well as the number of pressure levels - the lower the first value and the higher the second, the better.
- Additional functionality. To solve simple problems, it is not at all necessary to buy a tablet with powerful equipment. But in professional activities, express keys, ultra-high response rates, multi-touch, etc. can come in handy.
- Equipment. The standard package of a graphics tablet usually includes a pen, replaceable nibs, and a USB cable. These and other accessories are necessary for normal interaction with the device.
Types of graphics tablets
What is a graphics tablet? This is a gadget with a sensitive surface that attaches to your computer and allows you to draw using a stylus. In this case, the picture appears on the PC monitor. There are various types of similar products.
Now let's look at the main types of graphics tablets:
- Tabletop.
Those same gadgets that, for the most part, are produced by manufacturers. This is a small device with a plastic surface for drawing. The line drawn on the front part is displayed in a graphic editor on the computer. There is nothing left on the tablet itself. Such gadgets are popular and affordable. - Interactive whiteboards.
A technically sophisticated device that uses the same principle as desktop tablets. But the difference is that instead of a plastic board there is a touch screen. Therefore, everything that the user draws is visible not only on the computer screen. For a photographer, this device is ideal. However, the cost of boards of this type is high. - For digital signature.
Devices with a narrow specialization. Designed solely for digitally signing documents or approving transactions. As a rule, they are equipped with a small monochrome display. The functionality is very limited, since such gadgets are used to solve specific problems.
Knowing what types of graphics tablets there are, you will be able to choose the right device for specific tasks.
Popular graphics tablet manufacturers
Note! In fact, there are not many worthy brands producing this rather specific equipment.
The best of them:
- HUION is a relatively new brand of graphics tablets. The company produces inexpensive devices with good technical characteristics. There is also an emphasis on the highest quality, ergonomics and design.
- WACOM is the world's leading manufacturer of graphics tablets. The company has developed a special technology that eliminates the use of a power source for the pen. The brand's tablets are distinguished by their light weight, stylish design, powerful hardware and ease of use.
- XP-PEN is a company that uses the most advanced technologies in the production of graphics tablets. The brand's products best meet the needs of both professionals and amateurs. The devices are distinguished by their modern design, high quality, ease of use and compliance with European quality and safety standards.
Wacom graphics tablets
Wacom is considered the undisputed leader among graphics tablet manufacturers. If your budget allows it and you need a tablet that will last a long time, choose Wacom. The manufacturer has a large selection of devices: smart notepads, classic graphics tablets, interactive displays and even full-fledged tablet PCs. Most often, designers choose One by Wacom or Intuos.
One by Wacom is a line of tablets, the cost of which starts from about 5 thousand rubles and depends on the size of the device. Two options are available: A5 and A6. This tablet is ideal for beginners and those who, in principle, doubt whether they need a tablet.
One by Wacom is a good tablet for beginners
The more complex, expensive and professional Intuos also has several versions: Intuos, Intuos PRO and Intuos PRO Paper Edition. The line features a resolution of 5,080 lpi and stylus sensitivity from 1,024 to 2,048 lpi. Screen sizes are different - from A6 to A3.
Intuos tablets are positioned as devices for home use, Intuos PRO are considered professional graphics tablets, and Intuos PRO Paper Edition has an unusual paper handling function.
Wacom recently introduced a new version of the line.

What to look for when choosing a graphics tablet for drawing
To choose a graphics tablet that will last you a long time, you need to analyze the technical data. And also determine whether you are just going to draw for the soul or engage in creativity at a professional level. After all, the second category of buyers needs much more functions than the standard:
- The most comfortable working area sizes are A3 and A4; the narrower the screen frame, the better;
- The ideal aspect ratio for a graphics tablet is 16:9 or 4:3;
- The screen resolution of cheap models is 2000 pixels per inch, while expensive ones are about 5000 pixels per inch;
- The sensitivity of the pen depends on the artist: for experienced ones, you need a stylus with a level of 2048, for beginners, less is possible;
- Input methods are divided into touch and pen, that is, using a stylus;
- Based on power supply, graphics tablets are divided into networked, wireless and battery-powered.

What is a graphics tablet?
A graphics tablet or digitizer is an alternative type of input device that can be used in combination with or instead of a mouse, trackball, keyboard and other devices.
The tablet consists of two parts: a flat surface for drawing and a stylus (pen) programmed to work with the tablet. Typically, the kit also contains a stand or pen holder, and sometimes a wireless mouse that works on the surface of the tablet. A graphics tablet can be useful not only for artists, but also for ordinary users, as it is a very convenient device for entering information.
Most graphics tablets can completely replace a mouse. That is, the tablet works not only within the framework of some special programs like Adobe, it functions at the level of all computer processes.
And of course, a graphics tablet is a necessary tool for a stock artist who sells his illustrations on microstocks, since using a tablet greatly speeds up the process of creating and preparing illustrations.
Let's look at some basic characteristics that are important if you are going to choose a graphics tablet for yourself.

WACOM One Medium CTL-672
I bought a tablet for teaching mathematics. This was a new experience for me; I had never worked with such devices before. What do I want to note after 3 months? For drawing I used the free Microsoft Whitebord from the Microsoft Store; for mathematics it was more than enough. In Zoom I included a screen demonstration and the child can see everything perfectly. Of the minuses, I would note that the pen wears out quite quickly. This point can be solved in 3 ways: 1) order feathers from China, they cost pennies there. I ordered it a long time ago, but haven't received it yet. 2) do not remove the original packaging. Make a hole with nail scissors for the cable and draw directly on the polyethylene. I worked like this for 1 month and, in principle, the pen did not wear off at all, I could continue to work like this. 3) buy a protective film, it costs about 200 rubles. A month later, that’s exactly what I did. One of the disadvantages of this approach is that the film is very easily soiled. Collects all the prints. Another nuance, I bought 2 pieces and one set has some play in the pen itself. When touched, the pen sharply dips a millimeter inward. It disappeared when the pen was rotated relative to the longitudinal axis by a couple of degrees, but it was still unpleasant. A month later: Hello everyone! I received spare nibs from China, 3 months have passed since the date of order, I paid 265 rubles for 20 pieces. They sit like family. I also saw on a well-known website that they sell films for this tablet. Black and matte. If someone orders and receives it, please write your impressions in the comments.

XP-PEN Deco 01 V2
Rich equipment, many spare refills, film, glove, stylus stand, two adapters for different USB devices. Pen pressure is transmitted perfectly. My husband has an old Wacom Bamboo Fun Pen&Touch (still alive since 2011), of the same format, and compared to it, as noted in one of the reviews, heaven and earth. Everything is soft, smooth, my husband checked it with a ruler, everything is drawn clearly, he traced the coins, he is happy about the quality! The stylus navigates well on film, there are no snags or slowdowns.

WACOM Intuos S Bluetooth (CTL-4100WL)
Good tablet. Small, compact, with convenient buttons on which you can assign the necessary commands, which will also change depending on the application in which you are working. Doesn't slow down, works great via Bluetooth. There is no receiver included, so you will have to buy it separately. In general, this is not a drawback, you should have read this more carefully when purchasing, but, frankly speaking, with the current penny price of these devices, you could still throw them into the set. Not everyone buys them only for laptops)

Cool tablet. In general, I liked everything, it works fine. By the way, someone wrote that there is no sensitivity to tilt. There is sensitivity to tilt and it is declared by the manufacturer. When using some brushes in Photoshop, the effect of tilting the pen appears. Tilt angle - up to 60 degrees (according to the manufacturer). After working with the mouse, it’s unusual that in order to get to the corner of the screen, you need to move the pen to the corner of the tablet. You can’t do it like with a mouse - you rearranged it and moved on. Those. To work with a tablet, you need to move around the entire tablet, and when working with a mouse, your hand is accustomed to only the movements of one hand. When working with Photoshop (we didn’t work with other programs), you need to launch the Huion Tablet application every time and click the “Administrator Rights” button in it, otherwise, as soon as the cursor is over the Photoshop window, the pen immediately stops working. I don’t know how to avoid pressing this button every time after restarting the computer.

The tablet is as simple as the truth. The spare rods in the stylus wear out little by little and begin to scratch the tablet, but they are easy to replace by picking them up with your teeth and pulling them out and inserting a new rod. Don’t forget to download a program for the tablet from the manufacturer’s website, but only to disable the buttons on the stylus and uncheck the box next to Windows in the program. I am not a legend, but a tutor, I work through a tablet in the program for electronic boards ActivInspire - everything is very convenient. I recommend it. To all college colleagues in physics and mathematics. I recommended the unit, bought it and are happy!!

WACOM Intuos S (СTL-4100K-N)
Compact, lightweight, takes up very little space on your desktop. It performs its functions perfectly. No more is needed for retouching. The format no longer makes sense at all. The pen is comfortable. The buttons on it feel reliable. I'll see how it goes with use. The manufacturer disappointed me by the fact that it stopped supporting its old models and did not adapt the software for new systems like Catalina on the Mac. The previous tablet is still like new. There are even a couple of spare feathers. But due to software incompatibility, I had to buy a new device, by the way, at a rather difficult time for photographers and retouchers.

I bought it for retouching portraits in Photoshop. This is my first graphics tablet, so I have nothing to compare with. However, I can compare it with a regular mouse - the tablet is really convenient in terms of drawing masks and all sorts of fine work. But there are also unpleasant nuances - the area of this particular tablet is quite large, and moving from one edge of the screen to the other is tiring - you need to move your hand back and forth a lot. If with a mouse with high sensitivity you can make a slight movement of 3 cm and move diagonally across the monitor from one corner to another, then you have to actually move your hand across the entire tablet, through all these 20+ centimeters. At the same time, tear it off the surface so as not to draw a trace behind you. It's kind of annoying. But in the program for setting up a tablet, you can virtually reduce the work area, then sacrificing accuracy, you will gain in speed. Another option is to study Photoshop shortcuts more thoroughly so that you can do as much as possible on the keyboard. So the choice is up to the user. I didn't like one more nuance. Custom keys on a tablet cannot be configured so that when you press that key, it interprets it as a “press.” Those. If you hold down a custom key, the software seems to press it over and over again, as if you were quickly clicking on it. On the pen button, pressing the keys works normally, as expected. It would be nice if the software implemented a choice of options - holding or clicking. For some reason, the leaflet for the tablet recommends storing the pen horizontally or with the tip up. It is written that otherwise it may deteriorate. On the contrary, the stand is made so that it can be placed and stored with the tip down. Where is the logic? But these are all minor things. Overall, this tablet is a wonderful tool. And for a reasonable price you get excellent build quality, as well as everything that other manufacturers sell for much more. It is very pleasant to work with him; you really enjoy the process. In short, I recommend it!

WACOM One Medium CTL-672
The format of the working surface is close to A5 - there is room to turn around. Convenient interface of the setup program. Low consumption of the stylus rod, despite the disgustingly dense mode of use (there is a protective film). I won’t even talk about a strong case without backlash; in particular, they are chosen for their indestructibility of Wacom “boards”. An excellent tablet for working with 3D (no buttons, no touchscreen, no Bluetooth, but I don’t need it, see for yourself). In my opinion, this is an absolute “top for your money”. Although hunters for status markers have devalued this expression to the limit. The tablet suits my purposes; I took it exclusively for sculpting, not for drawing. Therefore, the lack of buttons on the tablet does not affect me in any way. For a 2D artist, these options are much more important, so be careful when choosing a model. Everyone praises something of his own, something that he personally likes and meets his needs, remember this. I really like the sound of the pen, as if you are working with a sheet of paper - plus the pleasure of use. Convenient customization of pen settings depending on the software used; you can set individual settings for any selected program. When you glue the film, get rid of the dust suspension using a steam generator or glue it in the bathroom. And place the side with the “ear”-tag, designed to tear off the protective surface for the layer with glue ON THE SAME SIDE that you attached to the tablet.

XP-PEN Star G960
Price - bought on a well-known Chinese website for 2600. Delivery within a week by courier. Quality - a nice simple box, the tablet itself is well assembled, nothing is loose, the materials are nice, it looks good. The set includes several feathers and a hook for pulling them out of the feather. Big size. Works even without drivers. No connection problems. I wanted to try out sculpting and digital painting, but I didn't want to spend a lot of money on a toy that probably wouldn't be used. Since this is the first tablet in principle, there is nothing to compare it with. As a beginner, I like everything; I don’t mind spending the money at all. It's kind of a shame that he has so few reviews.

HUION H430P
A very convenient size for a beginner, I thought it would be small, but no, there is enough area for drawing, even the symbols in the very corner of the screen are not difficult to press. I was very pleased with the easy setup and installation of drivers. A separate star for the additional buttons on the tablet itself and on the stylus; you can configure functions on them, such as zooming and switching to the eraser, and you don’t have to be distracted from drawing. In addition, the tablet has a long cable. The tip hasn’t worn off at all in a month, but the number of additional ones is very pleasing - you don’t have to look for it separately.
