Types and brief description
The devices differ in several features that you should pay attention to before purchasing.
Some boilers are not suitable for the type of power supply, others for the design.
Type of fuel
The heat source for solid fuel appliances is most often coal, wood or peat.
Fuel must be added every 4-8 hours, excluding long-burning models; adding firewood depends on the power, combustion mode and area to be heated.
Some devices are equipped with an additional thermometer, an auto-ignition system and a control panel.
Principle of fuel combustion
Pyrolysis - the basis of the device is the generation of heat by combustion of gas. Gas is extracted from wood by dry distillation from 600 to 800 degrees Celsius.
Water is heated by burning gas, which is produced by pyrolysis . This type of boiler has an increased efficiency of up to 91%. When operating such models, there is practically no emission of ash and soot.
Traditional - use heat from the combustion of filling material . Modern models use the top combustion technique, which ensures that each fuel burns alternately. Because of this, the amount of ash is reduced and efficiency increases to 80%.
Energy dependence
Volatile devices are devices that require power from the mains to regulate heating, temperature, ventilation and pump adjustment.
Non-volatile - these boilers do not require additional power sources . All control of temperature control, smoke removal, and water circulation is carried out mechanically.
How to choose and what to pay attention to
Type of fuel
If the client prefers coal when choosing fuel, then it is better to choose a boiler and steel . If firewood is used as fuel, then a cast iron model would be the best choice.
Power
This criterion determines how much area the device will be able to heat and how often it is necessary to add fuel.
NOTE!
For a large room and a two-story private house, a boiler with a capacity of 20-36 kW is suitable.
And for a small country house 14 kW is enough.
Weight and cost
The large weight and dimensions will cause inconvenience if the client does not have a special place to place the boiler.
Heavy weight also means higher installation and shipping costs . In addition, heavy boilers are much more expensive than lighter models.
Economical
The coefficient of a cast iron boiler is lower than that of a steel boiler. But a cast iron boiler takes longer to cool, thereby retaining heat for a longer time.
The time interval between fuel additions depends on the combustion time . Thus, economical cast iron models can keep warm all night.
Durability of the design
The default lifespan of equipment is about 10 years. But this depends on the careful handling of the owner and the quality of the materials from which the boiler is made.
If you choose a model with good materials, reliable assembly and properly care for the heating equipment, the device will last longer.
Safety
The equipment may become hot, creating a risk of burns.
Modern devices are equipped with a special layer of protection, and the walls of such devices do not heat up . In addition, protection is used on the door handles and a control panel is connected.
Popular manufacturing companies
There are several reputable manufacturers that are preferred by clients:
- Stropuva - a Lithuanian brand that provides longer burning from one load of firewood. It has an interesting barrel-shaped design, which makes it possible to install the device in a small room. Lithuanian devices are quite expensive, but they are durable.
- Zota - for those who like to use firewood as fuel, the Russian brand is suitable. The devices are small in size and low in power. But they are also reliably constructed and affordable.
- Burzhuy-K is a Russian company that produces boilers independent of power supply, operating on pyrolysis. The cost of boilers varies from 40,000 to 76,000 rubles. The boilers have high power and retain heat for a long time.

Stropuva Mini S8
The leader of our review of the best solid fuel boilers is capable of high-quality heating of a room whose area reaches 80 square meters. m. Coal, firewood, wood briquettes, and so on can be used as fuel. The burning time for one load of fuel is significant: ordinary firewood burns out in about 30 hours, briquettes in 48 hours. These are the maximum parameters that can be affected by the heat loss of the building, external air temperature, and fuel quality. The overall dimensions are not too large, the boiler takes up a minimum of free space. The design is not too complicated - the device consists of two cylinders placed one inside the other and made of steel. There is a layer of external thermal insulation, so you won’t be able to get burned on the walls of the boiler. The coolant passes through the space between these cylinders. Inside the smaller of them there is a combustion chamber, which is served through doors on the body of the device.
The combustion process itself occurs only in the upper layer of fuel. Heated air from a special chamber is directed here through a telescopic tube. When the top layer of fuel burns, the tube moves to the bottom layer and so on. This design solution allows you to increase the efficiency of the device, as well as adjust the temperature of the coolant depending on the needs of the user. Before entering the chimney, combustion products first flow around the air heating chamber, transferring their heat to it.
Advantages:
- Absolute energy independence of the product;
- Reliable and safe design;
- Can heat a large area;
- Uses fuel economically.
Flaws:
- Except for the rather high cost not found.

Features of solid fuel boilers
Solid fuel appliances help provide heat to homes that cannot be supplied with gas or centralized heating, as well as connect a heating system powered by electricity. They use environmentally friendly materials as fuel, such as coal, peat, firewood, and coke.
A wide range of pricing policies makes purchasing a boiler affordable for consumers with different income levels. But it is still worth understanding that any device has its pros and cons.
Advantages
The advantages of these useful devices include:
- Economical. Modern models are characterized by slow fuel consumption, and therefore bring lower costs than gas and electric boilers.
- Simplicity of design and installation. Installation of such a unit does not require special skills and knowledge, so it can be done independently using the connection diagram. This will allow you to save on the services of a master, which will protect the family budget from unnecessary expenses.
- Environmentally friendly. Most solid fuels are a renewable resource, and combustion products do not harm the environment.
- Multifunctionality. The boiler, equipped with a hob, can be used for cooking. You can also use it to provide your home with hot water.
- Autonomy. Units of this type do not depend on electricity and gas, so interruptions in their supply will not affect the performance of the system.
- Variability. For kindling you can use wood, coal, peat, coke. The choice of fuel depends only on the preferences and capabilities of the owner. If it ends unexpectedly, you can always use branches or sawdust collected on the site. Some boilers can even operate on dry manure.
- Low cost of the unit itself. Manufacturers present a wide range of products of this kind, both in the more expensive segment and in the economy class. In addition, a solid fuel boiler is easy to build with your own hands, for example, from a brick or a cast iron barrel.
- A separate room is not required to place the device; it can be installed wherever you want.
Flaws
Like any equipment, solid fuel boilers have their drawbacks, but there are not so many of them:
- To store firewood or coal, you will have to allocate a room, for example, a small room in the house, a barn or an outbuilding.
- In order for combustion to occur with maximum heat transfer, special operating rules must be followed.
- Cheap models get dirty quite quickly and require frequent cleaning. Also, they most often are not equipped with elements that facilitate use, for example, a gas burner for ignition or additional safety valves.
- It may be necessary to install auxiliary devices. If there are difficulties with waste removal, you will need to install parts to provide forced draft.
You need to choose a solid fuel system for your home wisely. Comparing the disadvantages and advantages will help you acquire a quality device. It is also worth considering that the efficiency of the boiler depends on several factors, for example, the level of thermal insulation and the area of the heated room.

Types of solid fuel boilers
There are several types of solid fuel devices, they are classified according to their operating principle. Before purchasing, it is important to decide in advance which model will best suit your specific needs.
Classic
A classic boiler is considered the simplest option for a heating system. To create them, steel or cast iron is used.
Such heaters operate according to the following scheme:
- Fuel is loaded into the chamber and set on fire.
- Combustion is regulated by closing or opening the damper responsible for supplying air to the device.
- During the combustion of wood, the coolant is heated, usually it is some kind of liquid, most often water.
- Using a radiator system, the coolant heats the air in the room.
I have been producing traditional boilers for over 100 years, during which time their design has gone through many improvements and changes. Thus, modern devices can automatically supply oxygen to the firebox. The damper is driven by special mechanisms that respond to changes in the temperature of the liquid. Indicators are configured on the control panel using buttons.
Most models are designed for use in systems with natural coolant circulation. In order for the device to produce maximum efficiency, it is necessary to provide it with good air exchange and proper draft in the chimney.
The advantages of these units include:
- Low cost compared to other models.
- Very simple design.
- Quite cheap raw materials for heating.
- Energy independence.
Among the main disadvantages are:
- When the combustion chamber is fully loaded, the fuel burns out in 3-4 hours. To maintain a comfortable temperature, you will have to regularly add firewood to the boiler.
- Steel appliances are cheaper, but have a relatively short service life (about 10-12 years). The fact is that the walls of the device are covered with combustion products, which have an acidic reaction. They can gradually “eat” steel sheets 6-8 millimeters thick.
Pyrolysis (gas generating)
Gas-generating boilers resemble conventional furnaces in their design. Through the loading hole, fuel is placed on the grate. It provides the necessary air circulation in the combustion chamber.
The wood is set on fire and waits until the fire covers it. This process is called the pyrolysis heater reaching its operating mode. After this, the access of oxygen is significantly limited, which is why combustion practically stops and the fuel begins to slowly smolder. The heat generated is sufficient for the gradual decomposition of the remaining fuel. This produces a mixture of volatile organic substances called pyrolysis gas.
This substance moves to the afterburner chamber, where secondary air is supplied. Gas heated to a high temperature (over 300 °C) reacts with oxygen and instantly ignites. Then it begins to burn, releasing a large amount of heat, and heats the coolant.
Gas generating devices have a number of advantages over direct combustion devices:
- The fuel burns almost completely, leaving behind very few combustion products. This allows you to clean the boiler less frequently.
- After the decay of organic waste remaining from burned raw materials, toxic substances are formed. They come out along with smoke and pose a danger to human health. Due to the effect of complete combustion, the release of organic matter by pyrolysis units is minimized.
- Effective use of firewood allows such boilers to operate on one stack for quite a long time - about 12 hours (expensive models provide heat longer). This significantly reduces heating costs.
- Solid raw materials most often burn unevenly, so the functioning of solid fuel devices is difficult to regulate. The operating principle of gas generating units does not include this problem, which makes such boilers controllable and suitable for automating some processes.
Before you buy a pyrolysis device, you should know about its disadvantages:
- High requirements for fuel moisture.
- They quickly pay for themselves, but their cost significantly exceeds the price of conventional boilers.
- Most industrial models require the use of forced draft. To be able to start the circulation pumps, you need to connect the device to the mains.
- If the coolant manages to cool down before it returns to the boiler, then you will have to install an additional bypass (bypass tube) to add hot water through a three-way valve. This reduces the efficiency of the system and complicates its design.

Pellet
Pellet boilers are considered the most convenient and safe. Wood pellets are loaded into the firebox automatically, and when the set temperature is reached, their supply stops. The volume of the pellet loading chamber allows the installation to operate continuously for several days.
The key advantages of such models are:
- Convenience. Many processes are automated.
- High (up to 93%) efficiency.
- Saving. Low fuel consumption and costs.
- Additional hot water supply circuit.
However, it is worth considering that in addition to their advantages, devices that run on pellets have their disadvantages.
Disadvantages of pellet installations:
- High cost of equipment.
- About once a week you need to clean the device using a special brush and remove ash.
- To store fuel you will have to allocate a large and dry room.

Long burning
Such a boiler consists of a body and a tank placed in it. This feature does not allow the outer box of the device to become very hot in order to protect the owner from burns. Expensive models are equipped not only with a firebox, but also with a chamber for storing fuel. From it, firewood automatically flows into the combustion chamber to maintain the fire.
The heat exchanger is located directly above the flame. It is worth clarifying that in long-burning units, fuel combustion occurs from top to bottom, whereas in traditional boilers it occurs from bottom to top. This becomes possible thanks to a special device - a pressure piston. It regulates the power and speed of combustion by changing the intensity of air supply.
Advantages of the device:
- Modern devices are made from durable materials, so they are durable.
- An advanced control system makes the boiler safe to operate.
- Many models are equipped with additional elements (controllers, buffer tanks, traction regulators) to make their use comfortable.
Flaws:
- The laying of firewood is done manually.
- A separate space should be allocated for a long-burning device, preferably a boiler room with good ventilation.
- The installation is heavy, so you will have to prepare a strong foundation for it.
